Personal Internet Guidelines Everyone Should Follow:
Harassment- One of the easiest things to do on the internet is to harass someone else. We may not even realize that we are doing it sometimes. Pay attention to what you are doing when you are on social networking sites, for instance. Do you constantly try to IM people who never answer you? Do you leave comments or messages for them when they don't respond to you? If so, you are probably harassing them. Be careful about how often you message or IM someone who isn't responding to you. If they aren't responding, it probably means that you are harassing them rather than trying to befriend them.
Personal Information Sharing- Many people put too much personal information out there for others. There are several problems with that. First of all, it allows too many people to know too much information. It also allows identity thefts to occur more easily and for potential employers to see a side of you that you don't want them to see. Be careful about what you post on the internet because it could come back to hurt you in the end.
Kindness- No law can force anyone to be kind. On the internet, it is better if you practice being kind for several reasons. First of all, you are being watched. You may not think that anyone cares about how you behave on the internet, but there are definitely people out there that care. For instance, potential employers might look at some of your posts and consider whether they want someone with that type of behavior working for them. Make your online presence as pleasant as possible because it could definitely affect your own future.
Money- Everyone likes to make a little extra money sometimes and the internet does provide a lot of ways for people to do so. The problem is, there are a lot of scammers out there waiting to take your money as well. Be very careful of any "deals" that you decide to look into. There are legitimate websites that will help you earn the money that you want to earn. The problem is when you try to find them because there is a lot of "junk" to wade through before you will find a legitimate business. The guideline that you need to follow on the internet concerning this is to do your homework before you decide to join anything that costs you money to get started. The truth is, if it costs money to get started and they don't want to tell you what you will be doing, it is probably a scam.
Photos- Don't post crude photos of yourself and be careful of all the photos that you post online. These photos can end up in places that you never even heard of before. They seem to pop up in places that you wouldn't want them to be. Give it a try. Go to Google and type in your name and then go to Google Images. You will be shocked to see that your photos could even be on social networking sites that you didn't know existed.
Emails- Emailing is one of the easiest ways to send personal letters back and forth with family and friends. It costs far less than sending things in snail mail and it gets there faster as well. What you shouldn't do is pass spam around to people through email. Many people send spam in the form of different stories which can be very annoying. Not everyone wants these type of emails coming in droves to their inbox. Don't bother people with every passed email that you get in your inbox. If you must send these emails around, do so sparingly. If you have seen the email a hundred times, chances are, so has the person you are sending it to. Only send those emails that are new to you and that might hold special meaning to the people you are sending it to.
These are just a few guidelines that every internet user should put into practice. If we self-impose a few guidelines for ourselves, it will make the internet a much nicer place to be. The government doesn't have a lot of guidelines for us to follow while on the internet, but if you practice a little bit of netiquette, you will find it a much more pleasant place to be.
