Personal Review of Singular for Treatment of Asthma

Aaron Smith
As a freshman in high school I was diagnosed with asthma, which was certainly difficult to deal with when you are into so many sports and activities as I was. I was determined to continue playing baseball, basketball, and soccer so I needed to find some serious help for my asthma. As it turns out the more testing the allergy and asthma doctors did on me they came to realize that my asthma is caused by my severe allergies. I needed to be treated both for the allergic reactions and the asthma. Since that time I have primarily been treated with two main medications for asthma, Singulair and Pulmicort. Pulmicort is an inhaler, while Singular is a pill taken orally once a day. Below I will share my opinions on Singular for the treatment of asthma.

Price/Ease of getting the medication:

The price of Singulair varies widely based on what kind of health insurance you have. If you do not have any health insurance the pill will be very expensive, but not as expensive as most of your alternatives. In terms of how easy it is to find Singulair at a local pharmacy it is very simple. Go to any local pharmacy and they will carry Singulair, since it is such a popular drug to treat asthma. Also remember that many allergy and asthma doctors have samples of Singulair that they will give you to try for free for a while.

Effectiveness:

I find Singulair to be a very effective medication. A huge benefit to Singulair is that it works to improve both asthma and allergy symptoms. The drug is not steroid, but rather it works as a leukotriene receptor antagonist. The pill certainly makes a difference for me in both the asthma and the allergy department, so I have to save it is definitely effective at doing its job.

Side Effects:

Singulair doesn't come without quite a few possible side effects. Most recently Singulair was in the news for possible links to a slight increase in mood changes and suicidal thoughts. The final study has not yet been reported, but the FDA is continuing its investigation and says people should continue to take Singulair now since no sufficient cause to think it is unsafe has been made.

Overall:

Singular is an effective drug for the treatment of asthma and allergies. I like the ease of taking the pill just once a day to control the symptoms. I must say that I have found that especially during the summer months when allergens are worse I have found I need a steroid inhaler of some kind in addition to the Singulair or else I have too many asthma flair ups. Singulair has some worries because of numerous side effect possibilities, but overall the drug is pretty effective.
