Telling my husband was an interesting ordeal. I was gaining weight all over not just in my mid section, my menstrual cycle has never been normal and it was not uncommon for me to miss several months without being pregnant. My husband tried to understand my weight gain and suggested that we buy a larger size. I was able to wear the larger clothes for 1 week then I was back to square one with nothing in my closet to fit. I finally, told my husband that I was going to get a home pregnancy test from Duane Reade and diet pills just in case I was not pregnant. I did not have any of the normal symptoms like nausea so the pregnancy test was going to explain why I was gaining weight. My husband went to work so I took the test at home alone the next morning. Oh my goodness, it is positive; there it was clear as day, the positive sign. I did not want to believe it so I went back to Duane Reade to buy the test that would display the words Pregnant or Not Pregnant before I actually told him. The second pregnancy test displayed the words Pregnant. I called him on his mobile phone but got his voicemail, so I left the news on his voicemail. He called me to confirm that it was me that left the message and not some woman with the wrong number because it did not sound like my confident self on the phone. He said he listened to the message 4 times before calling me and quickly deleted it.
Telling my 22 year old son was not as interesting as telling my husband, he was not happy at all. He immediately said he had to go so we ended the conversation rather quickly. He called several days later to tell me about the information he had found on the internet regarding old ladies have babies past 35 years. I was like excuse me son, who are you calling old? So we did not get a chance to finish that phone call because I hung up. He sent me a message via MySpace mail to hope that the new baby will not have a large head like him. I did not know he thought his head was large because it looked normal to me. I emailed him back via MySpace and said well I saw the ultrasound of your new brother and his head appears to be exactly like your head. I have not heard from him since. I call his mobile phone but only get to talk to his voicemail.
Telling the rest of my family like my brothers, in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins was pretty easy and they were happy to hear the news. No jokes about being too old because my mother gave birth to me when she was 43 years old. I worry about the new baby because he will come into this world without a chance to meet his grandparents, my husband and I have lost our parents. I think grandparents play a significant role in the family structure.
