Personal Values Can Improve Our Lives

Pamela Weir
Have you been stuck on a goal or a dream in your life? Do you feel not fully motivated towards it's achievement? The answer may be found in fully understanding your values. Dr. John DeMartini said, "Values are our destiny." Once you understand your own values, you can unlock the secret to your goal achievements and dream fulfillment.

We all filter what is important to us through our value system. However, we are only able to filter through a few values at a time. All of our decisions come through this "value" filter; our goals, our actions, our planning, and our decisions. Everything that's truly important to us in the moment . Our values focuses all of our behaviors and judgments. They even create how we communicate to others.

Let's say a person's top few values are:

Honesty / Integrity

Children's Education Wellbeing

Self Improvement

How would they incorporate these values into their daily lives? How would they communicate, respond, behave in order to fulfill these values?

This person is going to demand that in every situation personal or professional that honesty and integrity are the most important aspect, both from themselves and from others. All of their time, money, and recreation is going to be centered around the children's welfare and education as well as their own self development. Perhaps, even the self development of those closest to them.

They are stuck on the goal of financial security. They just can't seem to get it going. Why" It's not high enough on their value list to come into their radar. Here's the good news, our values are not written in stone. We can change them at any time, consciously. During certain situations and events in our lives, these values get changed without us even realizing it. Reviewing our values periodically is important to staying on track with our goals and dreams.

Follow this simple exercise to determine your present value system:

Value Exercise: Identify your values by asking your self these questions. Write down all the answers that come to you in a random fashion. Don't worry about the order just yet. Just write down what comes to you. Once you start listing answers, you will get a deeper sense of what is truly important to you. Your values will emerge. Here's an example: books, spend my time reading self awareness material = self improvement, knowledge

Q. 1/ How do I fill my personal space (office/home)? art, books, technology, etc.

Q. 2/ What do I spend my after expenses money on?

Q. 3/ How do I spend my spare time?

Q. 4/ What does my inner voice talk / think about?

The next step is to put them in order of importance. What is the #1 thing on this list that you value above all the others? #2, #3, and so on. Place a number next to each value you have identified. Draw a line between #5 and #6. Redo your list every three months or so.

Everything #5 and up is your current filter. The values you most focus on everyday. The higher the importance, the more intensely you will focus on that value. What you base all your decisions, actions and communications upon are done with #1 through #5. Are your goals and dreams part of your top five? If not, simply put them there until you have accomplished them. Want to be financially secure? Put in the #1 position. You will be amazed at what happens!

The caution is that everything #6 and below is your chaos! These are the values left in the dark. The good news is that if you are not happy with your chaos put it on the top five for awhile. You can change your top 5 at anytime. And when you do, you will change your life! You will begin to fulfill your goals and dreams. Imagine a life where dreams do come true.
