PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT ACCORDING to SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

Sheeba Sreenivasan
Personality is the type of person which is shown in the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. Every thought and action creates an impression on the mind. These impressions decide on how a person behaves the next moment and how he responds to that situation. All the impressions totally determine a person's character. The past actions determine the present thoughts and actions. The present actions will determine the future. This is the main principle that governs personality development according to Swami Vivekananda.

A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought, and could not have appeared without them. Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruit-age of his own husbandry. How a man thinks, feels and behaves is determined by the condition of his mind. Outward appearances or speech or mannerisms of a person are only edges of one's personality. They do not reveal the true personality. Personality development according to Swami Vivekananda refers to the deeper and inner levels of a person.

The important action of the mind that involves personality development is emotions. One should have control over his or her emotions. It will make that person possess a happier and healthier personality. Emotions are of two types. They are attraction and repulsion. Admiration, love, aspiration, joy, sympathy, pride, veneration, and similar feelings indicate attraction. Anger, hate, fear, jealousy, sorrow, shame, disgust, etc., are temperaments of repulsion. If one is enmeshed with the uncontrolled mind, his personality will not develop. In order to develop his personality, he should know how to control his emotions. This will help rise to a higher self from the lower frame of mind.

The way you are and feel inside is the way the world will perceive you. Many say the face is the index of the mind and your mind and your actions will determine your present and your future. A smile can help you win over an angry boss or even help you solve the biggest of troubles. Anger on the other hand can put you in many problems. Feel good and think good, be good and do good and watch how your personality takes up a new and good feel. Take the Swami Vivekananda way to personality development and make your path to success a lot easier.
