Personality Differences in Dog, Cat & No Animals People

Hannah
First let me start out by saying this is not based on scientific research, or statistics gathered by some census. This article and it's opinions is strictly based on my impression of people with and without animals over the past fifty-five years of my life. That's a lot of people. I also do have a background in the social sciences and psychology field, which is just an added bonus. So, let's look at what type of personality differences these animal and non-animal lovers seem to have, well at least according to me.

Ah, dog lovers. I haven't met too many people who truly love their dogs that I didn't like. They seem to be pretty outgoing, have a zest for life, and most definitely more physically active than their friends the cat lovers. They definitely seem to be a lot more mushy, and lovey dovey with their dogs than the typical cat owner. They love to play and get out doors and rough house with their precious little pooches. Yes, even the ones with the really big dogs. I can't tell you how many dog owners I know that sleep and cuddle with their dogs. They obviously are not perfectionistic, as their bed is usually as hairy as their dog. Yes, my bed too. They are as close to their dogs, as any human friend they may ever have. Yes, they do talk to them. Now, whether they hear any answer is defintley kept a secret, as they don't want the guys in the white coats to come and take them away. I must say my favorite people are definitely dog people. Well, at least the ones who are as ridiculous about their dogs, as I am mine!

Cat people, the mysterious, distant, independent people of the world. Just as cats tend to be somewhat independent, as well as with an attitude of I'll let you know when I need and want you, so I find most cat people. It's not that there any better or worse than dog people, they are just different in their personalities, and how they relate to other people. I find cat people to be very private people, that sometimes are hard to figure out. Where as a dog lover is usually right out there, open wide for the world to see, with a cat lover you have to dig a little deeper. Although cat people also love their fine furry friends, the attachment seems to be a little more subtle. It seems to me like their cats are more of a comfort, and a sedative, rather than a play pal and best friend like their canine friends. For whatever reason cat people seem to remind me of the old type beatniks of the sixties. You know, just a little bit spooky and strange. Please don't think I'm beating up on cat lovers, as my son who I love dearly is a cat person, and well, he is very contemplative, and at times moody. Honestly, I can never see him as a dog person.

Okay, here is where I get brutally honest. I have never met a person who doesn't like animals that I have liked. They are totally different from dog and cat lovers. They seem to be more self centered, and quite frankly lacking in any kind of warmth. If I had to choose one word to describe them, I would have to say sterile. Sometimes, they can also be perfectionistic. They can't even fathom the thought of any kind of animal hair anywhere in their house or on their person. They tend to think animals are dirty, noisy, and a waste of time. They see no reason, or purpose to own one. However, they think do their part when they down a 16 oz steak at their favorite restaurant. These type of people really give me the creeps. Sometimes I wonder when staring into their eyes if anyone is home.

Well, there you have it, my life long and somewhat educated opinion on dog, cat, and no animals people. Please don't take any offense no matter which one you might be. I always judge people on who they are and not what they have. I just find it interesting, that sometimes what people have and don't have say a lot about who they are!

I hate admitting this, but...you're right on every point you made, Hannah. Except one, and that's that some people want a pet but can't have one. I'm a neurotic cat person. My sweetie is an outdoorsy dog person. I'm still trying to get used to his dog going everywhere with us. My cats don't go on all our dates! But I'm trying. Really. Hard.

I like both dogs and cats, but I have recently adopted a kitten. He is a little ball of fur, fun and fleas. My mood has been happy and bright since the day that I took the little play monster into my house. I chose a cat simply for sanitary reasons, a cat uses the littler box. It is easier to clean a litter box than it is to clean puppy poo off the floor. I have a really weak and sensitive glass stomach. I think that all pets are fun and bring out the best in people.

Sheryl: When I was a kid my parents raised great danes. Well, here I had this itty bitty single bed, and the great danes took up most of it. I am so happy my parents weren't anal and let the dogs sleep on my bed. It was very comforting to me. Besides I had the bedroom at the spooky top of the steps!

Our late doggie, bless her, slept at the far end of our bed. But she was little. I 've seen some HUGE dogs allowed to sleep on beds.

JP: I just love cats with real personality!

Interesting observations. As an owner of both a cat and two big dogs, I can also see a difference in the way I interact with each species. I am definitly more playful and interactive with the dogs, and while affectionate with the cat, I pretty much follow his lead as to what kind of interaction he is willing have at a given time. Dogs are always "on", cats, not so much.

To ALL: Please know this was an article strictly based on MY experiences with people over the years. It's not a factfull, set in stone research article. There are lots of people who love animals and can't have them due to health issues, children who are sick, time constraints, NO available space and such, but they still love animals. I can only speak for the people I have observed & met over the years. This is what I base my opinions and this article on. I love all animals, unfortunately I don't have the money to run a wildlife preserve. I had cats for many years, because every place I lived wouldn't take dogs. However, I prefer dogs because of the playing and cuddling.I still don't care for the type of people who don't have animals strictly because they don't like them, because they are very strange to me.

You did a great job here. Hit the nails right on the heads. I love both. Dogs and cats, yet I own none. How do you define that personality. I would love to romp around with a dog. And I most definitely love the independence of the cats. But due to time constraints and allergy issues, I have neither.

As a cat person who loves dogs, I thank you for your most observant, well- written article (and I tend to feel the same way about non-pet people, too!)
