The Terrier Group
Jack Russell's are members of the terrier group, and as a typical terrier, they are independent, tenacious, intelligent, and comical. Jack Russell's come in different sizes and have different types of coats, but one thing all Jack Russell's share is attitude.
All terriers are hunters. It's not something you can train out of them, but it can be managed. Jack Russell's were originally bread to hunt rodents and foxes and they did not hesitate to take charge and get the job done. They would gladly burrow underground and bring the animal back to their master. The Jack Russell has one of the strongest hunting instincts of all the terriers, so they will not do well in homes with birds, gerbils, guinea pigs or other small animals.
Because of this strong drive, Russell's need a secure fence and to be walked on leash at all times. Even the best-behaved dog will dash into danger if it spies a tempting quarry.
An innovative owner will provide games and challenges to satisfy the hunting instinct of their Jack Russell's. Most JR's love to de-stuff their toys, so get used to picking up stuffing off the floor. I've heard people say they will not buy their dog a toy because they just tear it up; these people are not Jack Russell owner material.
Hiding treats in the yard or in specialty toys designed for hide and seek, provide a great outlet for the hunter in your Jack Russell. Check your local pet store for toys that encourage your dog to think and problem solve. Jack Russell's are highly intelligent and can be very destructive if ignored. Avoid problems by channeling your Russell's energy and intelligence into games and activities you select.
Exercise Requirements for your Jack Russell
A tired JR is a happy JR, and shares a home with a happy owner. Jack Russell's need exercise, exercise, and more exercise. Turning them loose to run in the back yard, or a leisurely walk around the block, is not enough exercise for the Jack Russell. Are you a jogger? Like to bicycle or roller bladder? Great, your Jack Russell will have no problem keeping up with you. A young Jack Russell requires a minimum of two 45-minute fast paced walks every day. No, they don't slow down. Jack Russell's remain active and playful even as they age, so be prepared to dedicate your life to exercise; it will be good for both of you.
Training Your Jack Russell
A professional dog trainer is worth their weight in dog bones when it comes to the Jack Russell. Begin training your new puppy from day one, and sign up for a dog obedience class. You'll be amazed how fast your Jack Russell learns. They are very intelligent and excel at sports, such as agility, racing, and fly ball. Dog sports are a great way to provide exercise and challenge your puppies' intelligence.
Remember, Jack Russell's are always thinking and are usually one step ahead of their owners at all times. If you want a dog that performs perfectly every time, or are if you are intimidated by a dog that can out smart you, you should pass on the Jack Russell.
It can't be stated often enough that a Jack Russell will need your attention and companionship. Whether your are painting a wall, planting a garden, or going to the store, you Jack Russell will want to be there with you - helping. In fact, if you look around and don't see your Russell, you better go find out what mischief is occurring.
If you decide you can dedicate the time and meet the training and exercise needs of a Jack Russell, you are in for an adventure. Jack Russell's love life. Everyday is a new exploration and their amusing actions will keep you laughing for years.
