Decide whether or not you want your rings to come in a set, or if you and your mate want separate styles with the same stones or inscriptions. Most of the time, you can find bride and groom wedding rings that come in pairs, but it's perfectly for each individual to express their own unique style with their wedding ring if desired.
Next, determine whether your inscriptions or special symbols will be on the inside or outside of your ring. Most people opt to have their inscriptions inside of the ring; this makes it much more personal and intimate. However, a message on the outside of the ring in between the stones can be beautiful as well, and will serve as a reminder of your commitment each time you look at your hand. Determine the feel and idea of what you want your inscription to say, and try to be as concise as possible. Some common inscriptions include the names or initials of the bride and groom, or the year and date of the wedding ceremony. After you decide where you'd like your inscription to go, make sure you have your message narrowed down to as few letters as possible. Most jewelers charge per letter for your inscription and this is in addition to the cost of the ring.
Once you know what you want to say and have an idea of how you want your ring to look, you should decide where you actually want to purchase your rings from. Choose the stones you'd like in your rings (while diamonds are most traditional, couples also choose precious stones like emerald, sapphire, or rubies). You can build your own ring with a jeweler, where you can select from a variety of diamonds and bands to put together to make your own original ring. Or, you can choose an existing ring from a jewelry store and add your inscription. You could also order your rings online through an antique jewelry store, and there are even jewelry outlet stores online that will let you choose a ring to order, and you can have the ring inscribed once it arrives.
Finally, make sure that you stay within your price range when choosing your personalized wedding rings. Make sure that the choices you're considering are ones you can realistically afford and be completely satisfied with. Set a definite budget for how much you'll spend on your rings, and take the other expenses that planning a wedding will create into consideration. With careful planning (and maybe a little willpower), you'll be able to purchase beautiful personalized wedding rings that will last a lifetime.
