The defensive handling is the most effective approach against unwanted insects and animals. Start gradually with gentle method and continue up to calling an exterminator. However, with a little care your home can be pest-free and nice to live in.
First golden rule is pests love water especially roaches. As they need to drink, they are attracting to wet areas. They can live without food for a while but never without water. So as a stable datum, do everything possible to keep all places dry from food, water and moisture. Likewise, if you got water leaks, repair it immediately once you discover them
Store up your food in firmly sealed dried containers.
Pet foods, oil bottles, honey, syrup jars, spaghetti, cereal etc are best stored in closed dried containers and wipe up trickles of grease or oil straight away.
If you got fruits and vegetables that you need throw away, dispose them right away.
After you consumed food and used dishes, wash and dry them. The best thing is to keep them in dry places for the next use. Sweep and sponge the floor every day.
Pet-feeding quarters should be free from excess food and spills. Ants and roaches love pet food.
Eating should be in the kitchen or dining room only. They are done and built for that.
Wash or dry clean clothes thoroughly before storing them in airtight bags.
Before recycling metal, plastic, glasses and paper food containers rinse and then throw them away. One hour is enough to draw to them pests.
Always lid and store garbage bins.
Any corners and crevices should be kept clean and dry focusing on the attic, and basement.
Do not let cluttered to be around, especially when located at the inside and outside of wall neither stack boxes directly against a wall.
Ventilate closed rooms and attics, which eliminate damp and moisture areas. If you got moistures, handle it by sealing all cracks and crevices with silicone.
Wipe and dry counters in the kitchens at all time.
Know the exact measure of how much water your houseplants need and do not overwater them.
Add screens to windows and doors, if you don't already have them. Change screens that are torn or don't fit tight and firmly.
New plants should be kept separately from the others, because you need to be sure that they are free from pest. So once you buy them, check them for pests before let them inside your house for the first time.
