Pet Care Going Green

Nico Riley
Lately it seems like more people have become concerned with the state our environment is in. As a result, people have been recycling more, driving hybrid cars, carpooling, using energy saving light bulbs, and even buying more organic rather than processed foods. While most people will claim to always read labels, you will notice it actually being done more as you shop. Those who haven't before are shopping in whole food stores, health food stores, and fresh produce markets.

With the "green" seemingly in high demand, another industry has decided to raise consumer awareness about some important members of our lives-our pets. The pet industry believes that in our purchasing and lifestyle decisions, we should also take our pet's lifestyle into consideration. Pet products ranging from food, grooming, bedding, toys, and other pet supplies all have various lines that offer earth friendly products. Apparently, matters of safety are a large cause for offering such a wide range of earth friendly pet products in addition to them being more beneficial to the environment.

In recent months, there have been several recalls on certain kinds of pet food. With their pets health and diet in mind, more pet owning consumers have began purchasing organic cat and dog food, natural grooming and litter products, and toys made from recyclable and eco-friendly products. The product that has seen the biggest surge has definitely been the area of pet food. According to sales data, the sale of natural and environment friendly pet foods and products rose by 25% since March of this year.

Organic pet food, like organic human food has no artificial flavors or preservatives. When we start shopping healthier for ourselves and pay attention to the ways food companies process our food and add lots of unhealthy stuff to it, it's important not to forget our canine and feline companions' diets as well. Naturally, most people want their pets to live a long healthy life and a good way to ensure that would be to feed them a healthy diet. Recently, many children's toys have been recalled. It would not be a surprising thing to see such toy recalls spill over to the toys we purchase for our pets. To ensure their safety and ease our worries about the toys they are chewing on, you can purchase organic, nature friendly pet toys for them.

With more people buying and using products that support the environment, we can not only create a better place for ourselves to live in, we can create a better and healthier us by eating more natural and less processed foods. Kermit the Frog was known to say "It's not easy being green." He may be right but in the end it will be worth the effort.

Good article..but it doesn't stop at cats and dogs. I have a friend who has restored to health several older horses who's owners thought they were to old for roping. She carfeully monitors their diets, goes organic when possible, gives them special herbs and even has a chiropractor in to treat them once a month.

I wish more pet stores carried these products. Then we'd have more places to turn in the event of a recall, and food that's safer overall.
