Pet Costumes: Ideas for Dressing Your Pet Up on Halloween

Heather Wood
Halloween can easily be considered one of the most enjoyable times of the year. Not only should you consider donning a costume, but also think about dressing your pet up for the holiday. Most people in the general public have a pet of some sort and we all love our pets dearly. It's a great idea to include the pet in the festivities. Whether you are planning to stay home and hand out candy or going to a party, dressing up your pet can be fun and entertaining.

There are in fact many different costume ideas that are available for pets, and depending on the type of pet that you have and the size that they are, you should be able to find a great and amusing costume for them. Some of the most popular pet costume ideas are:

· Sailor
· Pirate
· Batman
· Clown
· Fairy
· Pumpkin
· Angel
· Devil
· Fireman

Halloween costume stores carry outfits for both cats and dogs. Pet retailers such as Petsmart, also carry a variety of outfits that you can choose from. Dog costumes are the most popular and are made to fit the smallest of canines to the larger breed of dogs. Prices can range from approximately $10.00 to $40.00 for the more involved outfits. Two costume ideas that are especially cute this year are the Superman and Darth Vader outfits that come with all the accessories to complete the look. Both costumes come with a body suit and a cape to complete the look. Additionally, the Darth Vader outfit supplies a headpiece if your pet is calm enough to keep it on.

Also, you should remember that just because you may not see the outfit that you are interested in at a store, this does not mean that you cannot have it. For instance, there are many stores that offer design ideas for costumes, and so you can get all the materials that you need and make the pet costume that you want yourself. Stores such as the Rag Shop carry both patterns and fabric that you can purchase if you have the ability to sew your pet a costume. Popular patterns include spider and witch costumes.

When buying materials you should remember to purchase a lightweight fabric, so that the animal will not feel caged in. Also, you want to make sure that the animal is able to see and breathe easily, and that the costume is not too tight on any part of it. As well, you will want to watch for chewing, pawing, or other signs of discomfort while the animal is wearing the costume, so that you will know if it is bothering them or not.

Keep in mind that you should not put any beads, loose dangling accessories, or other things of the sort on the costume. Any of these materials can be a possible choking hazard for your pet. Remember that if your pet starts to get upset, remove the costume. It is cruel to keep your pet uncomfortable for the sake of your enjoyment.
