Many areas now have pet food banks, where pet owners can get help. One such resource is Kibble Konnection, operated by the Kent County Humane Society in Michigan. A new initiative, this pet food pantry is a way for area residents to ensure that the family dogs and cats get the food they need while allowing their owners to use the money saved for other necessities. Applications are available online at their website.
Distribution will take place on a monthly basis at the Kent County shelter, which is located at 3077 Wilson Ave. SW in Grand Rapids. The first distribution will take place on March 22 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, and applications must be received by the 20th in order to be considered for the March distribution.
For those wishing to donate, Kibble Konnection accepts bags of dry dog food and cat food. They don't have to be unopened, so if you bought something that your pet doesn't like, someone else's pet is sure to love it. Canned food is also being accepted but must be unopened. Kibble Konnection will also gratefully accept treats and cat litter. Donations may be dropped off at the shelter Tuesdays through Fridays from noon until 7:00 pm and Saturdays from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. There are also several drop-off points in Kent County, with more being added weekly. Contact the shelter or see their website for updated information.
Kibble Konnection is just one of the many pet food banks located throughout Michigan and the United States. If you'd like to help, or if you need help feeding your pets, I encourage you to contact your local animal shelter to find out what options are available in your area. With the help of pet food banks, family pets should be able to stay right where they belong--at home.
