Pet Food Banks in the U.S. - Soup Kitchens for Pets

Sunshine Wilson
Due to the current economic conditions, a growing number of family pets have been surrendered to humane societies and animal rescue groups. Families with financial hardships are finding that they can not afford pet food for their beloved family pet.

This has led to the establishment of pet food banks, or soup kitchens for pets, throughout the country. In the last few years, pet food banks have provided free pet food to deserving families, enabling them to be able to keep their pets.

Typically pet food banks will require that an application be filled out either online or in person. Recipient families must establish that they are in need by providing proof of income and a driver's license or picture ID. Additional requirements usually include providing a suitable home environment for the pet and an agreement that the pet will not be used for breeding or illegal pursuits. Some pet food banks will also require a visit to the recipient family's home before qualifying for free pet food.

Most pet food banks schedule the distribution of free pet food on specific dates and times at their facility or at a distribution center. Delivery of free pet food to recipient families is usually not available.

Donations to pet food banks are usually accepted from pet related businesses such as pet food manufacturers and pet food supply companies, however any business or organization may participate. Donations from individuals are also welcome and greatly appreciated.

If you would like to donate to one of the pet food banks, or if you are in need of assistance, here is a list of pet food banks in the U.S. If one is not listed in your area, do an internet search or contact your local humane society or animal rescue group.
