Richmond, Virginia is a historic city that boasts over 400 years of history. Richmond attracts more that five million people every year to discover the delights of the beautiful city.

Richmond is the second successful English settlement in America. Patrick Henry made his famous speech "Give me liberty or give me death" at St. John's Episcopal Church. Tuckahoe Plantation, which is Thomas Jefferson' boyhood home is open to tours. Monument Avenue is the only avenue designated a National Historic Landmark in the United States. Visitors enjoy the many restored homes and buildings in the area.

The recently renovated Hanover Tavern offers historical re-enactments, a restaurant and a theater. Magnolia Grange is an 1822 Federal style plantation house in the Chesterfield Museum Complex, noted for exquisite architecture. Visitors to Jackson Ward can learn the contributions of African Americans to Richmond history while on walking tours and by visiting museums. The former Capital of the Confederacy is home to some of the area's most famous Civil War battlefields.

The Jefferson Hotel. The grand Jefferson Hotel has a long and illustrious history in Richmond. .Form many years the hotel attracted high society, but fell into decline and was closed. Historic Hotels, Inc., a Richmond based group of investors, purchased the Jefferson in 1991. A multi million dollar renovation restored the hotel.

In 1994 the Jefferson was honored by AAA as a Five Diamond award winner, which is the highest award by AAA. In 2001 Mobil honored th hotel with their Five Star award. Forbes Magazine named the Jefferson the "Best Hotel in 'America" in 20001. The hotel offers many fine amenities, including a fitness center with cardiovascular exercise equipment, indoor swimming pool, concierge services, business center, The Salon at the Jefferson, and Gator's Goodies and Gifts. Candlewood Suites. Suite accommodations with living area and kitchen. Amenities include fitness center off site and some business services. and Pets under 80 pounds allowed with fee depending on length of stay. The fee is $75 for a 1-6 day stay and $150 for stays of 7 days and more. 804-271-0016.

Omni Richmond Hotel. Luxurious hotel offers the best of southern comfort in a contemporary setting. Omni overlooks the scenic James River in the heart of the historic and business districts. Amenities include heated indoor pool, outdoor tanning deck, 24 hour business center, concierge and high speed wireless Internet access. Pets under 25 pounds allowed with $50 fee. 804-344-7000.

Quality Inn West End. Guests enjoy a free deluxe continental breakfast, free high speed Internet access, seasonal outdoor pool, business center, free coffee and more.Pets allowed with fee of $35 for the first night and $10 for each additional night. 804-346-0000.

Sheraton Richmond West. Amenities include 24 hour business center, indoor heated pool, outdoor heated pool and more. Small dogs up to 25 pounds allowed. 804-285-2000.

    this, im sure, is no fault of the author but i have to mention that the associated photo is not the nickel bridge. its actually a double track railway bridge, locally referred to as the tressel bridge.

    The Omni in Richmond is gorgeous. The Jefferson is pretty damned cool to stay in. Candlewood is generic but ok for families. quality Inn is a bit on the crappy side, or was when I lived in Richmond.
