Pet Insurance: Helpful or Hype?

What Does Pet Insurance Do?

Like many human insurance policies, a good pet insurance policy will provide you with partial or full reimbursements for various medical treatments that your pet qualifies for. Depending on the insurance policy, this may cover things such as lab fees, x-rays, prescription medications, or even surgeries. In some cases, pet insurance may even help cover office visits and general procedures as well. However, due to the wide range of services that are covered, versus those that are not covered, it's always very important to read the fine print and ensure that what you expect from the policy is just what you're getting. If you're willing to look carefully enough, you're sure to find a policy that will work for you.

With modern veterinary medicine, veterinarians now have access to high-tech laboratory equipment and are able to perform far more advanced medicine than what was offered. Today, it is not unheard of for a dog to have not only x-rays, but MRIs, as well as radiation therapy. Some animals have received kidney transplants and other life-saving treatments. However with these advanced treatments, there is also a call for more expensive tools and training, and as these costs rise, more and more Americans turn to the pet insurance programs as a means of offsetting some of these incredible costs.

Where Do You Get Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance can be purchased from many different places. First of all, there are companies that offer it directly to customers and are usually found by searching through your local yellow pages or various animal care publications. If you can't find one through that route, you might try contacting local breeders or the veterinarian's office and see whether or not they know of any reliable companies in your area. Word of mouth is always an excellent form of advertising, so be sure to ask friends and family as well.

Local animal shelters and animal welfare groups often work hand-in-hand with pet insurance companies, offering adoptees free trial memberships, with a later option to continue the coverage. This is handy because it not only helps to cover your pet from anything that might develop after his shelter stay, but it also gives you a month's time to examine the policy, discuss it with the family, and decide whether or not it seems to be what you're looking for. Having this little leeway with time can often be a huge help, when it comes to making an educated decision about pet insurance.

Do I Really Need Pet Insurance?

With the cost of vet care increasing, it's no surprise that many new pet owners are considering pet insurance. Like any form of insurance coverage, pet insurance is there to prevent you in the event that something happens to your pet. While there is no guarantee that something will happen and that you'll have to fall back an insurance policy, it gives a great many people peace of mind, just in case that fateful day every comes.

But is it really necessary to get pet insurance, or are pet owners simply barking up the wrong tree? The answer to that question can be found within you own heart: Rather than asking if a pet insurance policy is worth it, try asking yourself whether or not your pet is worth the policy. What would you do, if something happened to your pet? While none of us like to think about something terrible like that, it's nice to know that should that day ever arise, you and your pet will both be protected - physically, emotionally, and financially.

That realization, alone, will make it obvious that pet insurance is worth every cent you invest into it.

I don't recall the name of the company we went with, but it is a Swedish policy and is pretty good. Worth it for sure for us.
