Pet Names that Topped the List in 2010

Abby Greenhill
The year 2010 is over and done, and we now look forward to 2011. If you are curious as to what pet names topped the list in the year 2010, the following trivia may come in handy at your next party!

According to Petfinder.com, the number one dog name for 2010 was, drum roll please.....Buddy, which moved Max, Jack and Rocky down the list a few spots.

As for our feline friends, the top name in 2010, another drum roll.....was Lucy for the second year in a row.

Petfinder.com is a pet adoption website. Therefore, their lists of the most popular dog and cat names is based on rescued pets. With Buddy as number one, here are the remaining names on the top 10 of dog names, followed by the top 10 cat names, starting with Lucy:

Top 10 dog names for 2010:

Buddy

Max

Daisy

Bella

Lucy

Jack

Molly

Charlie

Sadie

Rocky

The top 10 cat names for 2010:

Lucy

Midnight

Bella

Molly

Smokey

Tiger

Oreo

Max

Princess

Charlie

As you can see from those two lists, several names are fitting for cats or dog as evidenced by Lucy, Charlie and Max.

The folks at Petfinder.com have a blast working on these lists yearly, says co-founder Betsy Banks Saul. She also believes that Buddy and Max will always be popular names.

I've owned a few dogs in my time and their names were:

Pali (for a highway in Hawaii)

Mac (for a burger joint)

Chivas (for a brand of booze)

Lady (a rescue who came with the name)

Abby (just because I like the name!)

Last but not least, a cat named Sam (I was told it was a Samantha until the vet said he was definitely a Sam).

Of course, there are many other very popular names that humans like to name their pets, including celebrity names. Elvis topped the celebrity list followed by Houdini, Cher, Madonna, Twiggy, Oprah, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Coco Chanel and Shakira.

I haven't heard too may humans call out the back door:

"Come on Elvis, time to go to the vet."

"Twiggy, you messed the carpet, bad girl."

" Lady Gaga, come here, its time for a flea bath".

To each his own! That's why we have chocolate and vanilla! We are all individuals and we try to make our pets stand out in a crowd too. That can be accomplished by the use of the right name. Have fun with it!

It's amazing how dogs' names today are so much more like human names. I remember when I was growing up how all of the dogs had names like Fluffy and Princess.

After reading a book, I named two goldfish "Pericles and Aspasia." My kid couldn't say that, tho, so she named them after my brother and his wife, "Billy and Denise." My cats' names were Bambi, Buster (originally "Midnight)," and a calico named "Rainbow."

Fun read. My Max (cat) will be glad to know he is fashionable.

Abby? How could you call a pet your own name?! No-one in the family would know who was being talked about. "Abby's been scratching her hind leg all day. I guess something's wrong with her." "You mean Abby the dog, or...???"
My niece is called Abby. Her cat's called Meg. Good thing too. The cat's so fat she got stuck in the catflap at Christmas. Imagine the confusion if she was called Abby: "Abby got so fat this Christmas she can't get out of the house any more." :)

I love hearing about pet names. My SIL had a girl dog named Elvis and my step sons have a boy cat named Margaret. We always got a kick out of that.

I've had a cat named Snow. She was beautiful with long white hair and crystal clear blue eyes, and a cat named Midnight, pure black. Of course this was all before I became allergic to animals,. I allowed my (then) 4-year-old daughter to name one of our cats. I had named one Layla (because I loved Eric Clapton's song by the same name), and she called the other one See-Saw.

Say, I love Buddy. That's the name of our cat and he's the only male in the entire household, including my wife and girl.

When we were growing up my brothers, sisters, and my self each had a pet. Out pet's names were chosen by some oddity, or distinguishing characteristic. My sister had a weird dog that killed her sisters' puppies.
