Pet Product Review: Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution with Hydrocortisone

I have two dogs and one of them has had chronic ear problems for most of her life unfortunately. She has had skin problems since she was young and when her stomach and legs flair up, so do her ears. I can't even count on my fingers the number of vet trips we've had to make because of her ear problems but I can tell you it's a lot. We've had every single medication under the sun and after a period of time, it becomes costly. These medications include ones that have to be applied topically as well as orally.

What I decided to do one day was look for an ear medication that didn't need to be prescribed and could be applied topically. I of course thought that none existed but I thought the Internet is a wealth of information and there has got to be something out there that I don't know about. I came across a forum of people raving about something called the Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution. Many of their animals had ear problems and this product apparently worked miracles. Well I decided to bite the bullet and try it.

Well it wasn't cheap, let me tell you. It was about 18 dollars including shipping for a 1.25 fl. oz. bottle. Ouch! But if it works I thought, then the price would be worth it. On the bottle itself, it said that it "Aids in the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa due to bacterial and yeast infections". So I tried it on my dog that has had numerous ear problems over the years and guess what? It didn't work. To be fair though to Zymox, my dog has suffered from all sorts of different bacterias and I don't always get the same medication to use topically on her from the doctor.

Okay well I have another dog and at the time he had been having some bad ear problems for the first time in his life. On the outer part of his ear, the skin was turning black which was the infection. So I thought let me try this so I don't end up throwing 18 dollars away. The directions say to put the liquid inside the ear canal and massage the ear afterwords. Do this one time a day for 1 week and 2 weeks for infections that are chronic. A vital part of this treatment is not to with any other ear cleaners OR medications while using this product. You can however use their Zymox Ear Cleaner in conjunction with the Enzymatic Solution.

Anyhow, it took about 4 whole weeks but it worked! My dog's ears healed completely! I have used this product on him now for years and it works every time! Their secret is that they use what they call a three point enzyme system which are natural enzymes lysozyme, lactoferrin as well as lactoperoxidase. They also have it without hydrocortisone if you prefer. I absolutely recommend this product.
