Pet Safe Weed Killers

Dale Morris
How do you keep your yard looking good and your pets safe too? It's really not as scary as you might think. All of the following products are pet safe when used according to the directions. Whenever you are using lawn and garden chemicals, whether they are herbicides or pesticides, you should always read all the details and instructions before use. Look for any hazard or danger warnings on the instructions. Most commercially branded and sold herbicides are safe for pets, if you can keep them off of the treated area until the chemical dries. Depending on the amount of sun or shade, the chemical, how heavy you applied it and how dry or damp the ground is, this can be anywhere from 10-15 minutes or more.

Ortho Ground Clear Complete Vegetation Killer. It kills everything and prevents any new growth for up to a year. A good product for sidewalks, driveways, fence lines etc. Just don't use it where you want anything to grow in the next year. It is rain resistant so there is no need to worry when to apply or panic over those pop-up summertime showers. It's available at Lowe's and at some Wal-marts, Home Depots, Nurseries and Garden Centers.

Round Up Extended Control kills weeds and grass and prevents new growth for up to 16 weeks. It's rainproof in 30 minutes and visible results will appear within 24 hours. This is great in an area where you want to kill everything, but plan to replant the area in about 6 months. It is available at Lowe's and at some Wal-marts, Home Depots, Nurseries and Garden Centers.

Spectracide Weed and Grass Killer will give you visible results in as little as 3 hours and will prevent new growth for several months. It comes with a battery powered sprayer. It is rain resistant. It too is available at Lowe's and at some Wal-marts, Home Depots, Nurseries and Garden Centers.

Preen Weed and Grass Killer is for use when the objectionable plants are growing and active. It has no residual killing effect, because Preen is environmentally aware. According to their website www.preen.com any unabsorbed spray breaks down into natural materials with no residual soil activity. The MDSD for this product instructs that it is harmful to fish. It is available at most but not all Wal-marts, Home Depots, and Lowe's. You can check their website for availability in your area.

If you have your own spray bottle or tank sprayer you can use The Kitchen Method. Mix Vinegar, lemon juice, a tad of salt and a little dishwasher liquid. Shake until well mixed and spray that unwanted vegetation. Add boiling water to the mixture for faster visible affects. The amount of salt you use will determine how long you want to deter future growth of any habitation. 1 cup of salt to 2 quarts of water will keep anything from growing for a while. Remember, when we used to make ice cream the old fashioned way with rock salt and ice and a lot of turning and our parents were always there to make sure the run off wasn't getting in the yard? That's because salt gives soil bad qualities for growing any kind of vegetation. Best of all, it won't harm your pets as long as you don't spray it in their eyes.

If you are looking for products that kill weeds and not your lawn grass, all of the following are available at Lowe's, Home Depot, and/or Wal-mart.
