Pet Strollers: A Good Idea, But Not for Every Walk

Gretchen Lee Bourquin
In recent years we have been seeing a lot more pet strollers. As people downsize and move into smaller condominiums or apartments, but don't want to give up the companionship of a dog they get a smaller dog, and often they will get a pet stroller as well. While a pet stroller can definitely serve the owner of a small dog or other pet, they should be used somewhat sparingly. Even the most inactive breeds of dogs need exercise, and they can't get that from the inside of a stroller. Here's a quick guide on good, and not so good times to use the pet stroller.

Really long walks- There are times when you might have errands that are more than a mile away that you don't want to take the car for-- or maybe you don't have a car. Such a long walk may be too hard for a tiny pooch, but it doesn't mean he won't enjoy the fresh air. If you are stopping by a park you can always take him out of the stroller and let him explore a bit on the leash.

High Traffic walks- If your walk will take you by busy streets or other areas that are generally not pedestrian friendly, a stroller could be the safer choice. Trying to keep track of a small dog can impair your concentration on traffic, and endanger you both.

Trips to the Vet- If your dog's veteranarian is within walking distance a stroller might be a good option here too-- especially if your dog is going for shots or any other procedure that might make the walk home uncomfortable

Recovering from illness or injury- If your pet is sick, or recovering from an injury, he might not be up to going on his regular walk. Taking him for a walk in the stroller during this recovery period, while keeping your routine of going for a walk in tact. This also might be an option for an older pet that is prone to arthritis and other cramping. Carrying your pet may also be an option, but a stroller could be a better one, as you may be able to help your pet into a comfortable position within the stroller.

Overall, a good rule of thumb is to consider using the stroller for a small dog in the same instances where you might use a stroller for a 3-4 year old child. Generally speaking, a dog should be walked regularly. As cute as it may look in a "purse" or "stroller" it is important to remember that no matter how small the pet, it is a living breathing animal with needs and feelings, and should not be treated as an accessory.

If your dog does have a stroller meant for occasional use only, it should be kept in an area where it is not easy for your pet to find. Relying too heavily on a stroller can lead to your dog becoming complacent about his regular exercise and lead to a less healthy dog.

I have never heard of these, but I can see having one for the occasional use you mentioned. Good article!
