PETA Boycotts Candy Maker, Mars

Think Twice Before You Buy a Twix

Viktorya Hale
Imagine your favorite chocolate candy being tested first on helpless animals. Not to mention, the fact that it is utterly and completely unnecessary. Furthermore, it is not even required by law to conduct these tests. No, I am not speaking of the mice getting to savor the chocolate either.

PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) has boycotted the makers of Twix, M&M's and other favorite candies because of ruthless torture and killing of mice, guinea pigs, rats and rabbits. These acts of study are going on in San Francisco, Ca. Why you ask? Let's see what the hoopla is all about. You determine if it is cruelty. Keep in mind, it is not law nor is it necessary.

According to PETA, Mars is going against their very own policy in using rats for lab study. What is going on is that the rat is force fed by having a tube shoved down it's throat. Then it's leg is sliced open exposing the main artery. The artery is then clamped to stop the flow of blood.

Spokeswoman for PETA, Kathy Guillermo stated the studies seemed to be geared towards developing health claims. That is because chocolate contains flavonoids. Flavonoids protect against cancer and heart disease. The boycott officially started Monday, December 10.

In one study the mice were forced to swim in water mixed in white paint and find a hidden platform to avoid drowning. Yet later they were killed. On the Mars website they claim to bar animal torture to include euthanasia, vivisection or suffering of any animal.

More studies that were conducted included guinea pigs and rabbits. Plastic tubes were surgically placed on the artery of the guinea pig where cocoa was injected into the jugular veins to cause drop in blood pressure. In rabbits, after keeping them on a high-cholesterol diet and cocoa, the main blood vessel to the heart was cut out and examined.

You decide. Do you think that this is necessary? With the cruel things that go on in the world, would you want your children eating M&M's knowing that such cruel acts of torture were brought against these animals for virtually no reason at all?

There are other companies that have stopped animal testing because of PETA. These companies include PepsiCola, Ocean Spray, Coca Cola, POM Wonderful and Welch's. PETA is continuing their fight against this type of testing and ask that you help. Please visit this site and support the fight against unnecessary animal cruelty

Yesterday I saw 3 girls protesting mars animal cruelty. They were wearing only their underwear on Market Street in SF and it was only 45 degrees!!! That seems kind of cruel too.

The morris water maze is a test of learning and memory, animals swim through water clouded with powdered milk in an attempt to find a hidden platform. More info is available here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_water_maze

So how many more of PETA's claims are true?
Now lets all pull our heads out of our asses and try to think about how these other scientific procedures might be useful.

Katy, great article! This whole thing just makes me so mad. I'll boycott Mars for the rest of my life if I have to. I wrote more of a personal essay on this topic, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. You can read it at: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/491927/mars_vs_peta.html. Thanks again for the great article!
