PETA is Not an Organization I Will Support Anymore.

I Am Convinced.

People have told me not to support PETA. I ask them to tell me why and they say that the organization (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is not what it says it is and that I should look into it more.

Well I no know that I will not support PETA and do believe that the people who for ten years have tried to expose PETA finally did their job. "PETA kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to "put down" 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them. http://petakillsanimals.com/

PETA filed a report in 2008 with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. In it the organization's report showed that they had killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. Only 7 pets were found homes for while in PETA's custody.

I am really angered and sick about this. I in fact have written positive things about PETA. On "The Fifth Down," the New York Times football blog, a contributor asked a question: If you had to give up your beloved pet, would you be better off giving it to disgraced quarterback Michael Vick (of dog fighting notoriety), or Ingrid Newkirk, the president and founder of PETA? The answer is that if you really care about the animal that is part of your family's welfare, keep it as far from PETA as possible.

My question was also why would an animal rights group kill animals? PETA seems to have no comment so no one is sure but it seems that it comes down as usual to money. Killing animals that could get adopted and storing them until they are cremated is cheaper than taking care of them. This is the first time I have read this. Perhaps I've had my head in the sand following celebrities and the thought that these were good people. In 2007 the Center for Consumer Freedom criticized the celebrity supporters of PETA in a full-page ad in Variety.

Although PETA has a budget of over 30 million a year that could be spent on caring for the animals they spend it on ads telling us not to wear fur and not to drink milk. Gosh I was glad when they endorsed wearing fur if it has been handed down or bought in a consignment store. I think now I may wear my handed down fur jacket and not be ashamed.

Very close to PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, VA is the Virginia Beach SPCA. SPCA adopts out the majority of the animals in its care and on a small budget. "Now the death toll of animals in PETA's care has reached 21,339, including more than 2,000 pets last year. That's not an animal charity. It's a slaughterhouse.

Click here to sign a petition to revoke PETA's tax-exempt status (Read the fine print. They have snuck in other causes other than PETA.)

THis is truly SHOCKING! I am so glad that you wrote this, way to be an advocate. I wish so much that there was a real organization that I could throw my hat into the ring with, but for my husband and I, the msot good seems to come from helping local animals and local rescue groups. This just breaks my heart...

This is horrible. I knew there was something funny about PETA. I'll continue to support the ASPCA and my local APL.

OMGosh! I just receivd a ballot from PETA this week over the abuse of cats and dogs i the fur trade. How hypocritical of them! Maybe they should read Luke 6:41-42 for some clarity!

Thanks, Charlotte, I swear by peoples' reactions to some of my articles I think I may dream them up in my sleep!

They did a story on this locally the other day and I was shocked to say the least. Our local media keep track of PETA because of something that happened a couple of years back that was very ugly and PETA was involved and ultimately couldn't find a way to hide it. So I haven't been a big fan since then.
