PETA Obama Fly-Swatting Story Creates Buzz

Hartley Engel
President Obama has proven that he is enormously skillful at killing flies and, not surprisingly, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is none too pleased about it. It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that the PETA Obama fly swatting story is being covered by numerous media outlets, including MSNBC. Indeed, the PETA Obama fly swatting story is creating quite a buzz.

The PETA Obama fly swatting story all started when President Obama sat down for an interview at the White House with CNBC's John Harwood. The two men were about to discuss the nation's economic woes when, suddenly, a pesky fly started buzzing around the president's head. And that fly was extremely persistent.

As luck would have it (not for the fly, for Obama) he landed right on the president's left hand, opening up an opportunity for Obama to move in for the kill - and that's exactly what he did. President Obama took his right hand and swatted that poor fly back into the Stone Age.

When I saw the clip on TV, I couldn't help but laugh. It was a classic Obama moment and I just knew that a video of the Obama fly swatting incident would go viral on the web. In fact, the headline I immediately envisioned - Obama Kills a Fly - was quickly adopted by numerous bloggers.

But I also knew that animal rights activists would express their displeasure over the Obama fly swatting incident.

And right I was. The PETA Obama fly swatting story is all over the news.

"He isn't the Buddha," said PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. "He's a human being, and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act."

PETA's detractors have long thought that the organization is far too radical.

For instance, many people were outraged when PETA compared slaughtered chickens eaten for food to the slaughter of 6 million Jews and others during the Holocaust. The name of the ad campaign was "The Holocaust on your Plate."

And now the PETA Obama fly swatting incident has got some people once again shaking their heads in disbelief at PETA.

Here is what commenter Rebecca Alford had to say about the matter on MSNBC's web site:

"Are you kidding me? PETA is upset because Obama killed a fly? Comments like this take away from their organization's credibility and make them look ridiculous. Are there not any other situations they could make an intelligent comment about this week?"

Apparently not, Rebecca.

PETA members should just themselves, and feed their corpse to the bugs.

The day PETA openly boycotts every single business that sells OR USES flyswatters, fly paper, bug zappers, or for that matter pesticides of any kind, is the day I won't have to call them losers for being mad at Obama for killing a fly. Either be angry at every person who kills a fly or don't be angry at any of them.

Do PETAns drive cars? They must walk instead, and stop killing bugs on their windshields!

you are both so ignorant and cant think of any other words besides swear words to express your lack of empathy for living things. I hope one day, someone feels that way about you. karma.

I like how the author immediately envisioned the headline "obama kills a fly" and feels they need to kinda take credit for thinking of it first. I'm sure that everyone else who isn't a creative genius like the author, took hours trying to think that one up.

And PETA wonders why people think they're extreme radicals...
Seriously, a fly? Obama kills one, another 8 million are born around the world. They are not in danger of extinction anytime soon. PETA should just stick to protesting fast food chains and throwing red paint.

Every commenter here is wrong. Let's see,

Before you criticise them, just read their statement. You can't say "Don't you have something better to do" when the media called them begging for their position on this stupid little matter. PETA sent their fly catcher as a friendly gesture probably, if you really read the stories from the source, they weren't taking it all that seriously, but still sticking to their message. I can't say it about every story about them, but this time PETA did ok.

  • Media exploited PETA in this case6/18/2009

the media is exploiting PETA in this case. They were begging PETA for a quote, all media, they knew it would create a controversy resulting in web hits. You guys are not seeing the reality here. PETA didn't go looking for trouble, the media basically trapped them when they smelled a story. Their response was rational, albeit a little ambiguous.
