PETA's Inconsistent Policies - Animal Rights Group Kills More Than They Save!

Kris B
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) exists for the stated purpose of protecting the rights of animals. They claim to look out for the best interest of animals, and step in to stop animal abuse. They also have dedicated many resources to stopping all sport hunting and fishing.

It does not take much research to find the plethora of inconsistencies that are spouted by PETA operatives. One recent article written for PETA touts the decline in the number of hunters and fishermen as a victory for their mindset. But then, the author shows her ignorance by a couple of illogical statements. Consider first:

"Most of us find it repulsive to flip through cable channels and stumble upon the obligatory hunting program with a man propping up the head of a magnificent buck he's just slaughtered or the lone fishing program with a man showing off a beautiful fish flailing helplessly at the end of a line."

What is an "obligatory hunting program?" This indicates that the TV networks are not smart enough to figure out that no one wants to watch these murderous shows of slaughter. They have to show these programs to satisfy the 2 or 3 people in the country that might want to watch it. After all, if they can't see their violent programs, they might kill someone! The mentality behind this quote is ludicrous! TV networks will not waste programming time on programs that will not bring in revenue. That is why shows get cancelled all the time. These programs are bringing in huge amounts of money for the networks, as they are very popular. There are, in fact, several channels on most cable and satellite lineups that are dedicated to the outdoor sports, including extensive hunting and fishing shows.

Later in the same article, the author had this to say:

"Today's healthy-minded kids aren't interested in killing animals any more than I was. A survey on youth hunting conducted by Responsive Management found that the majority of young people have "no interest" in hunting. When asked why, more than half said they "love animals" or "don't like killing animals.""

This quote obviously displays the idea that loving animals, and hunting are mutually exclusive. This is simply not the case. Hunters love the animals they hunt, but they understand that they are a part of controlling the numbers of those animals. When hunting is removed from conservation efforts, it is not long until the number of animals far exceeds the land's carrying capacity. There have been no feasible alternatives proposed for controlling animal populations, and the chances are there never will be.

This author seems to suggest that killing animals under any circumstances shows that the person in question does not like animals. However, recent reports from PETA have shown that they really have no qualms about killing animals themselves. In fact, the most recent reports show that PETA killed 97% of all the animals that it took in during 2006. Of all animals "rescued" by PETA, only 12 were adopted out to new homes. PETA took in 3,061 companion animals, and euthanized 2,981. Some were transferred to other facilities, while a few also died of some other cause while in the care of the PETA facilities. This 97.4% euthanasia rate is far greater than the 34.7% kill rate of the county facilities that PETA protests! The sad truth is, PETA at the very best operates on a double standard.

It is completely inconsistent, dishonest, and hypocritical to see the way in which PETA functions. How can they impose a morality on the rest of society that they cannot, or will not live up to themselves? Hunters at least are up front with their intentions. They are planning to kill animals to help control their overall population, and ensure the health of the herd. But, PETA claims to be rescuing animals from death, only to turn around and euthanize them. This duplicity is probably the reason they failed to submit their report until 9 months late!

It is time for people to realize that PETA is not what they claim to be. This organization makes claims that are no where close to their true actions. There is no excuse for the abuse of animals, but outdoor sports are not "abuse", and PETA's role in stopping these sports are not sincere, as the very arguments they make against them are exposed by their own practices. This organization cannot even handle the overpopulation of pets in this country. In fact, their practices are probably at least partially responsible for overpopulation of pets. If they have their way in rural communities, their practices will also be responsible for the overpopulation of game animals.

if you don't enjoy it, then don't eat it. problem solved, at least for the rational.

The Cat is correct. Humans are the only animal that kills for fun. I think it's sick to enjoy killing.
Do I eat meat ??? Yes, sometimes, but I do not take pleasure in it.

Personally, I love animals, but would never back an organization like PETA for many of the reasons you listed Kris, and some others. Now I'd like to address something "The Cat" said: "Watch other animals kill? They do it to survive a harsh world. Humans kill for pleasure." Actually, most hunters actually eat what they kill. Also, it's kinda ironic that you chose "The Cat" as a moniker since the common house cat kills for pleasure. How many times has you seen (or heard) about a well fed cat that still hunts but doesn't eat the kill. I can personally recall many times I have found dead, uneaten birds, mice, squirrels, etc. on my door-step in the morning. Perhaps, next time you choose to argue a point you'll spend less time defining what a human is, since it doesn't help your argument as well as actual content would.

The PETA people really are crazy. They say it's wrong and cruel for you to kill an animal. But if they do it, it's just and merciful. Give me a break! And what I find to be truly hypocritical about them is that there are fellow human beings on this planet who are genuinely suffering, but they're more disgusted that you can watch hunting shows on TV.
