Hiring college coaches as head coaches hasn't proven to have a favorable success rate. Hiring a college coach? Does that mean the team should learn the basics again? Does it mean that the players are treated as if they are in college, and not the pros? What will happen if he does gain control of player personnel decisions? What will he look for in a player? Will this be a successful attempt for the Falcons to become a top team in the NFL? Perhaps the team may even go to the playoffs, and maybe even the Super Bowl.
Even though, the Falcons need to hire a coach possibly Carroll, there may still other problems. For instance, the Falcons are in need of a QUARTERBACK also. They had Petrino coach this season, but resigned before this season was over. Since Michael Vick isn't able to lead the team, they will need a leader. Perhaps, the Falcons will aim for a quarterback that can complete passes to the wide receiver core.
Carroll's experience previously with the NFL was as coach with the New York Jets. His record as coach at the time was 6-10. Then he had a stint with the New England Patriots as coach, from 1997-99. His record was 28-23 with a division title and two playoff appearances for the period with Patriots. While, at USC his record is 76-14 with two national championships in 7 seasons. They were ranked No. 3 this season, and ended their season with 49-17 rout of Illinois at the Rose Bowl. His record with USC this year was 11-2.
Whether or not Pete Carroll may be a positive impact on Atlanta Falcons may never be seen. His experience may matter or may not ever matter. If he could take this team on a run for the Super Bowl may also never be seen. Could he turn a mediocre quarterback into a great quarterback? Or would the Falcons gain a good quarterback, so Carroll could concentrate on the remainder of the team may also never be seen. As for now he is a coach that has gained some interest for what he has and has not done. His future with the Falcons still remains to be seen.
