Pete Carroll Ready to Succeed as Seattle Seahawks Head Coach

Carroll Leaves the Sunny California for the Cloudy Skies of Seattle

Former USC coach, Pete Carroll, has left sunny California for the cloudy skies of Seattle. After seven seasons as coach of the USC Trojans, Carroll returns to the NFL as head coach of, the Seattle Seahawks. Carroll's left behind a college program he led to two national titles. USC is such a college power house, it almost makes Californian's forget they don't have an NFL team. The team is wildly popular, and so was the coach. Pete Carroll was, King of Southern California, but he's left the comfortable confines of his kingdom, and has embarked on an uncertain foray into the world of professional football.

Putting aside the alleged violations USC may be faced with, Carroll leaving for the Seattle Seahawks coaching job makes sense for him. While it's not California, Seattle isn't bad for a west coast guy. In Seattle, Carroll isn't hampered with time constraints. The Seahawks need major help at just about every position, and the new coach will be given time to bring in his kind of players. Unless Carroll does something outrages, he'll have the luxury that most coaches don't have, a patient organization behind him.

While the odds are clearly stacked against Carroll, everyone's seen the very short list of college coaches who've found success in the pro's. Even Carroll's own prior stints as coach in the National Football League, didn't go well. So, knowing all that, why is Carroll coming back? He's coming back, because he can.

At the combine, Carroll seems genuinely happy to be back. "To come back now, I do see it a little differently," Carroll said. "I'm more appreciative, I think, of the steps that we take and the format of the whole thing. There's something about it, it's more tangible. The work that we do, it's more objective than subjective. That feels good. It feels like that's the way we should do things. I'm glad to be back." As Carroll goes through the combine, he'll carry an advantage with him into the draft, having recruited, coached, or become familiar with many of the available players.

Pete Carroll is back in the NFL and successful or not, good for him for trying. Carroll just wants another chance, to see if he can coach successfully at the professional level. Don't we all strive to reach the pinnacle of our chosen profession? If he fails, he joins a long list, and he can live with that, knowing at least he tried. If he succeeds, it'll be vindication. There are varying opinions on Pete Carroll, but whatever you think of him, he's been given what most of us dream of, another chance to fulfill his dreams. Now that he's back, let's see how long he stays.
