Peter Gammons Leaving ESPN at the End of the Week

According to ESPN.com, Peter Gammons, a legendary baseball analyst and reporter, has made the tough decision of leaving ESPN after baseball's winter meetings this week.1 Peter Gammons is known very well by sports enthusiasts all over the country for his dedication to quality reporting and commentating for the major league sport of baseball.

Gammons will now pursue his career working for the MLB Network and NESN, a locally owned media company that broadcasts for the Boston Red Sox baseball team. Gammons has many outstanding achievements for his works in journalism with the Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated and ESPN. He was awarded the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for exemplary baseball writing in 2004.2

According to a statement made by Gammons, "My decision to leave ESPN and move on at this point in my life has been conflicted. I owe a great deal of my professional life to ESPN, having spent more than half of my 40 years in journalism working for the network, and the choice to move on was made with nothing but the strongest feelings for the people with whom I worked. ESPN gave me a great deal more than I gave it, and will always be a huge part of who I am."1

Many people have mixed feelings about Peter Gammons leaving the network. Some truly enjoyed his reporting because of his catchy stories and speedy entrances into them. Others are excited he is leaving because of questionable opinions made too early in stories (the A-Rod steroid case). All in all, one can surmise, opinions aside, that Peter Gammons produced quality material that the public enjoyed during his years at ESPN. His legacy will not soon be forgotten as he continues to pursue what he loves: reporting Boston Red Sox baseball.
