Peter Himmelman Invites You into His Furious World: Internet TV Show
Internet TV Show Vastly Entertaining and Worth Checking Out
On the website known as Ustream or, via Peter's website, you can view his weekly internet show known as "Furious World." I am here to tell you that just one viewing will be enough to hook you and make you want to come back the following week to see what's happening then. The show is a mixture of pre-recorded skits (some of them deep and beautiful, some strange and some downright hilarious), live music, interviews and other bits.
The thing that stands out, first of all, is the live music. Peter is in his home recording studio in each episode and he and his band play his music. This is the perfect way to introduce yourself to some of the best tunes you have probably not heard before.
The find of the century, so far, is guitarist Jen Leigh (AKA Dirty Jenny). Jen Leigh is a musician that is going places and it's best to get on that bandwagon right now. She is a guitar player in the vein of Jimi Hendrix and she even plays left-handed. One of the highlights of the show was the week when those of us who pay the $10 subscription fee went Backstage and saw Jen and Peter jamming with just the guitar and drums. First she played drums while Peter played the guitar and then they switched. It was rock and roll at its most basic.
Kritin Mooney is almost Peter's sidekick during most shows. Kristin is gorgeous both in her appearance and her voice and has been a backing vocalist for Peter on such seminal albums such as "Skin." She adds such depth to the songs, but then she adds the off-hand comment during the times when the group is just speaking to each other. She's great.
The rest of the band is great too and I am embarrassed to say I don't have all of their names at my fingertips. I am sure there are other fans of the show who can help you.
You van view the show for free at the website, if you want. Be sure to sign in at the right an participate in the chat going on at the same time as the show. The room is filled with diehard Himmelfans and sometimes some of the best parts of the show are going on in the chat room.
In between songs Peter puts together skits and pre-recorded pieces. He does essays and poems while video runs of him driving on the 405 in L.A. Then there's "Turtle Talk" where a deep-voiced tortoise named King Ferdinand gives life advice and philosophy to Peter and the audience. There is a recurring bit where a supposedly Persian man gives various, and dubious, history lessons that are likely to leave you laughing. There is the strange skit involving three cows.
There are regular guests too. A man named Bruce from a radio station in Pennsylvania stops by twice a month to play unique music he thinks Peter and the audience might find interesting. Sometimes it's interesting and sometimes it's not.
Often the show ends with the "Speak Out" segment where fans can call in. Normally there is only time for one or maybe two calls, but it's almost always hilarious.
The show itself if rife with technical problems, but that often adds to the humor. This is an internet show, after all, and things go wrong all the time. Still, Peter makes it funny and proves himself to be a surprisingly good talk show host and a very good interviewer. Whether he is interviewing an author or a centegenarian pilot or a stuntman who once worked in the Israeli army, he manages to come up with great questions and show interest in what is being said.
For those who love the show, there is a way to donate money or become a $10 subscriber. If you do that you get an original piece of Peter Himmelman artwork suitable for framing. You also get access to the Backstage Pass which happens before and after the show. This really lets you inside the workings of the show. Plus, you get free music to download. Peter even releases a long-forgotten and thought-lost album just for $10 subscribers.
Summer is a tough time to find anything good to watch on television, that's for sure. So, you are forced to go elsewhere for entertainment. Of course Furious World is likely to run even when the fall schedule comes back, but if you spend a little time online with this group you will not be disappointed. The music alone is worth checking out.
I guess you could say I am a bit of a "fan boy" when it comes to Peter. This may be true, but I promise you that if you spend time checking out Furious World you will not be sorry. You will hear great music, meet interesting people, laugh, find yourself thinking and it may open up a whole new entire world for yourself.
Check it out for King Ferdinand alone!

Post a CommentI know this is an older post, but for those following Peter Himmelman, he will be appearing live on Stripped Down Live with Curt Smith (Tears For Fears). Check it out at http://strippeddownlive.com
(Lastly, to Furious Fan, almost anything -- except a Peter Himmelman song, which is always the essence of perfection :) -- could be better written or edited. I respectfully disagree that this article is poorly written. I've seen better, but I've seen a WHOLE LOT worse. The complaint was unnecessary and called attention away from the important part of your comment.)
Pt. 5 (The last word in the previous comment which was cut off was "music.")
One more thing of interest: Peter Himmelman is Bob Dylan's son-in-law. Yes. THAT Bob Dylan. Personally, I think Peter is *way* better than Dylan ... though on the rare occasion when Peter covers a Bob Dylan song, I find myself wondering. :)
Pt. 4 So you don't have to spend anything except time to check out this AMAZING musician. (Clearly, I'm a "fan girl" myself ... I have loved Peter's music for so many years, and it has helped me through so many difficult times, that I chose to use only HIS music in my wedding. In fact, I walked down the aisle to his song Shilo, from the album Skin.) You might not like his music ... and if that's the case, you've only used up a little bit of time. But you might LOVE his music ... and if that's the case, I almost feel a little bit sorry for you -- because you'll then be hunting down his older, label-released, out-of-print albums. However, you'll be fortunate to have found another exceptionally gifted musician to add to your music library -- and Peter has a many in-print albums available through his own website at peterhimmelman.com (which is usually the least expensive place to purchase anything Himmelman-related if it's still in print) for you to start getting to know him and his mu
Pt. 3 Bryan also didn't mention for those of you who are unable to tune in to Furious World when it plays live (whether you're stuck at work, live in an area of the world where it's 4:00 a.m., just forgot, or what-have-you) that you can download the podcasts of previous weeks' shows on iTunes. Just put "Peter Himmelman" and "Furious World" into the search box, and you'll find them -- and they're all FREE.
Pt. 2 One of the things Bryan Alaspa hinted at, but didn't specifically highlight in his well-detailed article about Peter and/or his weekly Internet variety show Furious World, is how skillful Peter is with improvisational skills. Anyone who sees Peter live in concert is always treated to a handful of created-on-the-spot songs which range from the hysterically silly to the hauntingly philosophical to the stunningly beautiful. Please look up Peter Himmelman on YouTube for literally *hours* of enjoyment viewing such rarities, recorded by his fans live at concerts around the US (and perhaps elsewhere around the world). Peter's improv skills are on display weekly on Furious World, too; every week contains a treat you won't want to miss.
I am a $10 Furious World subscriber and wouldn't miss the show every Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. central (or 7:00 p.m. pacific, if you prefer) for anything. Nor will I give up my $10 Backstage Pass; it's the best $10 I spend all month.
I have been one of Peter's biggest fans since I discovered him when he opened for Richard Marx in 1988 (I may be old, but at least I've been able to keep up with the rather prolific number of albums he's released!). While most Himmelfans will report a variety of favorite Himmelman albums (mine is Skin, but you must also have From Strength to Strength -- oh, and Synesthesia ... and Gematria ... and Flown This Acid World ... and, and, and ... LOL), each will have a similar list of "ands" or "buts" -- and there are absolutely no "ifs" about that. There simply isn't a bad Himmelman album (oh, the Himmelvaults contain some gems! and his albums for children are *wonderful* -- I don't even have kids, but I play them all the time!), or a bad song.
One of th
Although extremely poorly written, I'm elated to see an article about Peter Himmelman. Furious World is my new addiction...every tuesday at 7pm...a MUST SEE!
