When Petfinder reached its 10th anniversary, there was plenty to celebrate. In 10 years, Petfinder helped place more than 10,000,000 pets with families. The original Petfinder site was limited to the creators' home state of New Jersey. Beginning corporate sponsors of Petfinder included Petco, Bissell, Merial, Purina and Petopia.

By 2006, Discovery Communications announced the acquisition of Petfinder. Currently Petfinder finds homes for over 2.3 million pets annually. In their first ten years of operation, Petfinder adopted out over 10 million pets.

Petfinder is an online database of pets to be adopted. More than 10,000 animal welfare organizations throughout the United States and Canada are represented at Petfinder. Pets listed for adoption include cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, little furry creatures, pigs, horses and more.

Petfinder users can search by breed, animal, size, age and gender. Petfinder search results are based on the user's zip code. Pets located closest to the user's zip code are listed first. Shelters, rescue groups and pets have their own home pages. Typically Petfinder lists a description and photo for each pet. Pets for adoption are updated daily.
