Petfinder Adopts the Internet March 15 for Pet Adoption

Online Animal Adoption Clearinghouse Celebrates Golden Birthday

Linda Ann Nickerson
Have you ever adopted a pet? Would you? Petfinder is urging bloggers to promote pet adoption on March 15, as the online animal adoption database marks its 15th birthday.

Animal lovers can join the festivities for Petfinder's Adopt the Internet Day in many ways:

Petfinder invites web hosts to add official badge links to their online pages to promote the animal adoption outreach on March 15, 2011.

Participants are encouraged to take an online pledge to pass the creature-loving word to at least one additional person each. By doing so, folks may enter a free online sweepstakes to win free Bissell Pet Hair Eraser® Vacuums. Ten vacuums will be awarded. (We have one of these, and it is truly helpful in homes with shedding pets.)

Another website, ICanHasCheezburger, is hosting a pet photography captioning contest, featuring pet photos from Petfinder. The winning captions will appear on the site on March 15 for Adopt the Internet Day.

Facebook users are encouraged to replace their own profile photos with pictures from Petfinder's Adopt-the-Internet All-Stars gallery on March 15, adding promotional captions like these:

"More than 320,000 pets are waiting for homes on Petfinder.com. Help Petfinder Adopt the Internet today and find forever homes for as many as possible!"

"I adopted my pet from Petfinder, and now I want to help get this pet adopted! If you want to help pets in need of forever homes, please repost this!"

Twitter fans have been urged to post Tweets promoting pet adoption and including this hashtag: #adopttheinternet on March 15.

Petfinder also pleads with Bloggers of all sorts (not just pet-specific bloggers) to publish animal adoption posts for the occasion, including photo-links to creatures listed in the group's online database gallery. More than 318.000 animals are currently listed as available for adoption through the Petfinder database.

The site even includes a Featured Pet Module, enabling browsers to search available pets from animal shelters and rescue groups geographically or even locally. Listings may be sorted by specific organizations and facilities as well.

Pets may also be listed by species and breed on the Petfinder site. Categories include barnyard animals, birds, cats, dogs, horses, pigs, rabbits, scales/fins/other creatures and small/furry pets.

Founded in 1996, Petfinder has led to the adoption of 17 million pets through online searchable listings offered by more than 13,000 participating animal shelters and adoption organizations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
