PetHarbor.com - a Great Tool to Help You Find Your Next Pet at a Shelter

The Easy Way to Search for Dogs, Cats, and Exotics in Animal Shelters Near You

Valerie Hansen
I came across this great website a couple years ago when I was volunteering at an animal shelter taking photos of rabbits and other "exotics". It was very useful to help see when exotics were at other shelters so that I could go visit them and bring supplies to them. Fast forward to a few months ago, and once again the site is proving to be a very useful tool for me as I help my girlfriend look for a young red female miniature dachshund.

While most people know about www.PetFinder.com and it is a great tool as well in searching for a rescue or shelter pet, I have found that that site isn't always updated regularly by shelter volunteers. Most shelters do however, post pet photos to www.PetHarbor.com and also link them from there to their website. Rather than going to every shelter website to look for the pet you want, you can go to www.PetHarbor.com and search.

Searching for your pet online is very easy. First, you type in your zip code or city name. Then, a list of shelters will appear. Check off the shelters you are willing to drive to should your potential new pet appear there. Then click the "Search" button. Now search "Adoptable Pets" (and if you are ever have the unfortunate experience of losing a pet, there is also a button for searching lost pets that have been found and turned in). Here you can search for a dog, cat, or other (others include: cattle, sheep, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, iguanas, fish, etc.). You can search by breed, gender, age, size, and even the main color! If no search results come up under the breed you are looking for, you can also search similar breeds by just checking off a box.

Unfortunately, shelters are very busy places and occasionally you will still run across a pet that has just been adopted out. For the most part however, I have found that this website is kept very up-to-date. While shelter workers or volunteers can mistake one breed for another, it is still faster to search through all the pets online rather than driving to shelter after shelter wasting time and gas.

Thanks to www.PetHarbor.com, you can spend less time searching the shelters for your new pet. You'll be able to find your new pet faster and be less likely to give up your noble quest to save a pet's life. So if you are looking to bring home a new addition to your family, don't forget to check the shelters and opt to adopt!

My sweet dog Rocky- wandered out tonite. We live in Sabal Harbour, Bradenton Fl. Rocky is Black with white in the usual aging spots. He is 10 years old and is going a bit "senile", deaf and blind. No matter- we all love him and will not be okay until we know he is okay. Please send him back to us. Anyone turn him in yet? I was told to go to this site by "Sue" at Animal Rescue Helpers. Rocky needs medicine, too. He is part Chihuahua and weighs about 17 pounds.

    Thanks so much-
    Linda

i have been trying very hard to get on your one web site where all the shelters are which is petharbor.com national animal search engine where there are tons of shelters and places where they take in strays and for some reason i cannot get on there. we have lost a very important part of our family and we cannot find her. my brother was at a rest area on I-75 near miami fl and she was out and he was locking his truck and then went to look for her and she was no where around. a truck driver that knew her said that a woman had her in her lap and was petting her and the next thing he knew she was gone. we have no idea where this lady was from or where she was going. so we have no idea where our baby is. she disappered on oct. 29th 2007 and i have been doing and trying everything i know to find her. and i am not about to give up now. she belongs home with us. the thing is she had a collar with a tag and the vets phone number on it and we heard nothing. i have been going through the petfinde
