Petition Asking Al Gore to Run for President Gets More Than 100,000 Signatures

Grassroots Organization Delivers the Petition to Gore's Office

Draft Gore, a grassroots political action committee dedicated to persuading Al Gore to run for president, announced today that its treasurer delivered a petition, containing more than 100,000 signatures, to Gore's office in Nashville, Tennessee. The petition, which is available on the organization's website, urges Gore to run for the Democratic nomination for president.

It's not clear exactly how much support Gore actually has, at the moment, for a potential run. The Draft Gore website, citing a Washington Times story, says that a recent New Hampshire poll done by Suffolk University shows that Gore would win the New Hampshire primary, beating out Hillary Clinton by 32 to 26 points.

However, a recent national USA Today/Gallup poll shows Gore to be the choice of only 16% of Democrats and Democratic leaners, a number far below the 37% who said they supported Clinton as their first choice.

Gore himself has repeatedly said that he was not planning to run.

According to Draft Gore's press release, "a very large number of signatures" come from Independents and Republicans, not just from Democrats, and many of the signers regretted not voting for Gore when they had the chance in 2000.

Draft Gore will be launching a national radio ad campaign this week, starting with ads on the Stephanie Miller show, a liberal talk-radio program.

Gore has kept himself in the public eye, first with his film "An Inconvenient Truth" and his subsequent appearance on the Oscars, then with his involvement with the Live Earth concerts and his new book, "The Assault on Reason." As of today (July 12), "The Assault on Reason" is ranked number 38 in books on amazon.com.

Update [2007-7-10 10:3:26 by azizhp]: people seem confused about ActBlue's Draft page. The money goes to Gore if he declares, or the eventual Dem nominee if he does not. So its risk free.

Update [2007-7-10 10:7:30 by azizhp]: Fred Thompson, another undeclared candidate for President, is raising boatloads of cash.
