There is a collar that attaches to your dog and a small walkie-talkie looking handset that you keep with you to control it. The collar adjusts from six to 28 inches so it fits most dogs. The collar has eight settings so you can find one that is strong enough for your dog to feel without hurting him. You may want to try it out on yourself to see how it feels. The instruction booklet explains how to decide which setting to use based on your dogs weight.
We chose to purchase this device instead of an invisible fence for our dog because we can use it in other settings as well. I am especially pleased with this product because now we can hike with our dog with no problem. Previously, he used to run off to chase small animals or other dogs. We did not want to have to keep him on a leash all the time so we used this device to train him to come back the first time we called. This process was fairly simple and took less than a week. I would call his name and if he did not turn around to come back I would buzz him. He quickly learned to come the first time I called to avoid being buzzed at all. I almost feel comfortable hiking without it now.
You can also use the trainer for other purposes such as training your dog not to jump on people when they come in the house or to stop barking at people passing by.
The trainer works up to 400 yards away so it will give your dog plenty of room to explore while still being within your control. It is rechargble so you do not need to worry about buying batteries for it.
Overall, this product is very easy to use as you simply need to strap on the collar, set the intensity, and push a button when you wish to use it. I feel it is not cruel at all because it can make an unpleasant feeling for the dog without being painful. Using it has saved a lot of frustration for both us and our dog as he learns what behavior is expected of him.
