All of the recalled products were sold between the dates of August 21, 2008 and January 19, 2009. It is important to realize that PetSmart is issuing the recall on a voluntary basis and as of now, they are unaware of any illnesses directly related to their products. However, food products are continually being tested in the FDA's ongoing investigation into the current Salmonella Outbreak.
The Salmonella Typhimurium has been identified in the Peanut Corporation of America's Georgia facility. Though the PCA does not sell directly to the consumer, they are a distributor to institutions, residential facilities, and other companies which use the peanut butter and peanut paste in their products. Since Salmonella was first identified the PCA issued a recall on their peanut butter marketed under the brand name, King Nut. The FDA has worked tirelessly with state health departments across the country, as well as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and has come to the conclusion that the Peanut Corporation of America is the direct source of the outbreak.
Since the peanut butter and peanut paste from the PCA has been used by a wide variety of companies, it is important to realize that the recall extends to more than just peanut butter. Any product that has peanut butter in it is potentially contaminated, especially if the peanut butter or peanut paste came from the PCA. The original source of the PetSmart Recall has been linked back to the PCA as Pet Food Peanut Paste sold through either the PCA or their other brand name, Parnell's Pride. The current recall numbers for Pet Food Peanut Paste currently recalled by the PCA include: 8183 through 8366 and 9001 through 9016. All institutions, companies, and facilities should contact the PCA with any questions, comments or concerns regarding the recall.
If you have purchased PetSmart Grreat Choice Dog Biscuits then you are advised to stop using the products immediately. You are encouraged to bring them to your nearest PetSmart for a refund. You may also exchange the product if desired. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns you can contact PetSmart at 1-800-839-9638.
