Petunia Arrangements for the Patriotic Holidays

Agnes Farside
Like many people, I like to decorate the outside of my house for the Fourth of July. Actually, I will put out my decorations of red, white and blue right before Memorial Day and keep them up until after Labor Day, because this patriotic color scheme is appropriate for all holidays through the long summer months. I am always afraid I might overdo my adornments and make my home appear tacky instead of tastefully decorated, so I choose small and subtle objects to display America's colors. One way I accomplish this is with containers and planters filled with red, white and blue petunias.

Types of Containers

I like to use all kinds of containers for my patriotic petunia arrangements such as a worn out boot or other type of shoe, a beat up washtub, a cracked flower pot, a painted car tire, a discarded sink, a rusty wheelbarrow, decorative pots of different sizes, shapes and colors, solid color flower pots, painted milk jugs, wooden window boxes (my favorite), bird baths, bird feeders, roofless bird houses, mason jars, old purses, baskets, used paint cans, and so on. Almost anything with a cavity that can hold dirt and water can be used as a container for petunias.

Petunia Colors

There are many colorful varieties of petunias being sold today, so it may take some time to pick out just the right ones for your arrangements. A few of my favorite red, white and blue petunias are:

-Falcon Series Blue
-Titan Series Blue Petunia
-Easy Wave Blue
-Celebrity Series Strawberry Red
-Avalanche Red
-Titan Series Crimson Pet
-Celebrity Series White
-Avalanche White
-Aladdin Series White
-Patriotic Mix Single

If you do not care how the petunias appear in your container, than the Patriotic Mix Single is the one to use.

Petunia Arrangement

Placement of your petunias in the container is a large part of the arrangement. For striking designs, arrange them in different combinations such as red petunias on the left, white in the middle and then blue on the right. If you have a long container like a window box, repeat this pattern as much as space allows. For round containers try an arrangement with blue petunias in the center, white ones circling the blue ones, and then red petunias on the outer edge, circling the white ones.

Decorating your yard and home with red, white and blue petunias is an excellent way to show your American patriotism.
