PG-13 Movie Merchandise Marketed to Very Young Kids

Several superhero movies have been released recently. These movies, such as Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, each received a rating of PG-13. However, regardless of these PG-13 ratings, each of these superhero movies has been strongly marketed directly at young children.

As an example, a look at the rating for Iron Man shows that it has been rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and brief suggestive content. The rating for this movie also lists the statement that parents are strongly cautioned because some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. The rating is absolutely accurate and fair, as the movie definitely contains suggestive content that is clearly inappropriate for young children.

However, despite the fact that this movie's rating clearly identifies it as one that is intended for individuals aged 13 and older, there was an overwhelming marketing campaign directed at very young children. Iron Man toys, costumes, children's art supplies, children's books, coloring books, crayons, birthday party ware, stickers, etc., swarmed the shelves of stores all over the country, particularly in children's toy departments. Additionally, many Iron Man clothing items sized for toddlers and preschoolers were in abundant supply. Tiny Iron Man sneakers, Iron Man mittens intended for very small hands, and a variety of shirts in sizes 2T and up, were in abundant supply for several months surrounding the opening date of the Iron Man movie.

The Incredible Hulk is another superhero movie where this strong marketing campaign directed at very young children is evident. The movie The Incredible Hulk also received a rating of PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence, some frightening sci-fi images, and brief suggestive content. With scenes involving people being burned alive, among other things, The Incredible Hulk is clearly a movie that is too intense for very young children. There is also a sexual scene that although brief, is undoubtedly inappropriate for small kids.

Again though, there is a seemingly never ending supply of The Incredible Hulk products designed specifically for very young children. From toys intended for children aged 3 and up, to an abundance of shoes and other clothing items in toddler and preschool sizes, as well as furniture and bedding items that are clearly intended for children, the manufacturers of The Incredible Hulk products are undeniably aiming this merchandise at young kids.

It doesn't take much thought to realize that if tiny children are excited about characters like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk on their toys and clothes, that they are likely watching these movies as well.
