Phantom Dust is an X-Box exclusive game, so this guide essentially only pertains to X-Box users, especially X-Box Live! users since most of the stuff I will be explaining is online play oriented.
First off, Photom Burst is an Optical school skill, and is classified as a "mine" type as well. What Photon Burst does is explode energy around you within a certain distance (a few feet). Some people may not find this skill helpful, but with the right uses it can easily become one of the best skills out there. Photon Burst can be used for both offense reasons and defense reasons, which is why is it one of the most versatile skills in the game.
I suggest keeping Photon Burst equipped for cloes combat situations where other players, or the computer is coming after you with close-ranged attacks such as elemental swords and such. Once the other player, or computer, rushes at you, use Photon Burst instantly to send them flying back. The damage on Photon Burst is pretty good also. In open maps Photon Burst is less effective, sadly, but it is still a great skill to have since close combat situations are almost always at hand in Phanton Dust, online or offline.
Photon Wave is the little bother of Photon Burst. Photon Wave is another good skill to have, but earler in the game when aura particles are most likely to be lower. If you find a Photon Burst from your arsenal earlier, I suggest leaving it alone or equipping it is need-be, and just holding onto it till it is needed. Do not erase it by capturing another skill to the button is assigned.
In Phantom Dust there's always characters running around and jumping off elevated edges to attack another player. This tactic works a lot, especially since the other player cannot really do anything fast enough to prevent the attack. However, with Photon Burst, or its little brother Photon Wave, you can easily counter an attack and deal a good amount of damage to their life bar as well. If you get lucky, some of the environment may damage them as well from the explosion, and they may also suffer some fall damage as well.
