Phelps Marijuana: Is Michael Phelps Smoking Weed?

Marijuana Could Be Taxed

Matt A. Maxx
Today, the 'Phelps Marijuana' and 'Michael Phelps Smoking Weed' stories hold top reading spots on the internet. According to the British newspaper 'News of the World' our favorite Olympic swimming star Michael was caught on film happily smoking away out of a big cheery cherry-red marijuana bong at a South Carolina college-crowd party.

Internet reader comments included on the vast amount of stories devoted to 'Phelps Marijuana' and 'Michael Phelps Smoking Weed' are running the normal celebrity gossip comments: 'Who cares?' and 'What about his lungs?' seem to be among the favorite comments on the comment blogs.

What do YOU think about the issues brought up in articles about Michael Phelps smoking weed stories? Don't we really have issues showing that go slightly beyond a few college age young adults imbibing?

My personal opinion includes a very bad attitude about media paying for gossip stories that are designed to injure reputations and promote the use of illegal substances as proper for the 'in crowd' to be doing.

Sure, many people enjoy unwinding with marijuana or a few drinks on weekends, but is it proper to be announcing this fact to impressionable children who are idolizing our sports hero's like Michael Phelps? Smoking weed is an illegal act. We preach this fact to our children who will now see Michael Phelps doing it without visible consequences.

The Michael Phelps smoking weed habit is quietly being promoted to our children as an appropriate party time activity when authorities are not involved visually upset that weed laws have been broken.

We can expect that the Olympic star may lose a few dollars on advertising contracts if sponsors sever the ties to a marijuana smoker. Our children will not be exposed to this; the cheery red marijuana weed bong is what they will internalize.

Perhaps it is time for the United States of America to legalize weed. If American comments on the habits of Olympic star Michael Phelps smoking weed or drinking, then it is logical to believe that marijuana could be made legal and taxed to help with economic issues. Phelps marijuana smoking choices could donate to our struggling economy in a nice way.

Michael chose to smoke marijuana, and did so because media promotes pot as a normal for of relaxation for young adults. This issue isn't if Michael smoked marijuana, the showing issues is the question: Should Weed Be Legal and Taxed?

  • Michael Phelps marijuana smoling could be taxed.
  • Michael Phelps friends cherry-red bong could be taxed.
  • Michael Phelps smoking weed could help the economy.
Michael Phelps is an Olympic swimming star who probably shouldn't be putting smoke in his lungs. Perhaps he didn't inhale?

would he have to give up any trophies or awards. Marion Jones did. Michael Vick had to do prison time because of dogs, etc. Are there double standards?????? Did he do any jail time????

Any mind altering substance is not good for you even if it is good to you.
Was it ever brought to light who outed Phelps?
Marijuana has been lied about since the earlier part of the last century mainly as a way to deport Mexican illegal farm workers out of the U.S.. The FBI and others made it inot the demon it is today because anybody can grow it and it grows everywhere, unlike tobacco which can be controlled and TAXED. It is always about the dollar and who is getting it.
As a child of the 60's and one who has consumed great quantities of weed I would caution Mr. Phelps to cool out. The herb is bad for his lungs and his brain, I am living witness to that but so is alcohol, cigarettes and drug.
He should not be made an example of and they did not, if he had been Black it would have been a different story. Look at the way Michael Vick is being treated there are many people who will tell you all he did was waste good food.

I think people should leave him alone.

As the mother of a 23 yr old, while I'm not thrilled Michael was caught blowing off a little steam in a REALLY stupid manner, it certainly doesn't merit the press or the condemnation.Michael is incredibly blessed, young, male, and human. Trust me, this won't be his last misstep. We live. We learn. We move on.

Matt, I wrote an article myself about Mr. Phelps. If you have time, check it out. I looked at it from the perspective of hero worship.

This is a great article.. I have to wonder about the amount of time and energy we spend talking about this while the banking and investment industries have decimated our economy and people like Bernie Madoff is sitting in his multi-million dollar condo working on a plea agreement.. where is the equity on how and what we prosecute??

Ok, so pot is illegal... how many people can say that they haven't done something illegal? He is just a kid, and we all make mistakes, GET OVER IT! In my openion... he admitted to this as a mistake. People are just blowing this out of preportion!

If we live in a country where we murder innocent babies through abortion because there's "no way to enforce it" and alcohol is legal (which kills 13,000 people in drunk driving accidents and a million more in alcohol related deaths/illnesses each year) then it might as well be legal. Maybe the sales tax could go to something useful.

All in all though, it makes me think athletes are pretty bad role models for our kids.

Very well-written! Although he is an Olympic athlete, he is human, too and still finding his way through fame and all of that. There is so much controversy about pot but I've seen lives ruined by alcohol - and that is legal!
