Philadelphia Memories

Recollections of Germantown

Mr. Chip's
The days of ice cream trucks and loving relatives.
That's what Germantown means to me. Sitting
on the stoop of the porch having a good time.
Listening to my aunts and Uncles. Cadillacs
with the bat-mobile wings. All the good dinners,
listening to birds sing.

Now things aren't the same, people keep dying,
neighbors are scared. Most of my relatives have
moved or gone on. Policemen don't even want to
patrol the old neighborhood anymore.

Just not safe for them or anyone. Can't turn back
the clock, wish that I could, to the Philly I remember
when it was good.

Mr. Chip's...so sad. We recently took a long trip on the "23" up and back from Center City to Chestnut Hill. The North Philly neighborhoods are ROUGH. I so remember all the good stuff you and Justice mentioned. How about Cheese Steaks (can't get a good one too far away from Philly...that's still true). And who can forget getting Italian Ice (we called it water ice) from the carts on Market Street. How about the Uptown Theater...that's what growing up in North Philly will do to you. Mister Softee...you'll tell your age, if you can remember winning the daily prize if your number matched the number on the bottom of your cone. Ah...Philly memories. With family still there...it's a good place to visit. I still hope and believe for a renewed Philly -- I'm optimistic.

DUDE! I am SOOO touched by this. I am from Riverside, and I remember Captain Noah, "Move Closer to your world, my friend", "Speed Racer" on channel 17, Dr. Don Rose on channel 48, Hy Lit, Veterans Stadium, Mister Softee, KWY news radio 1060, 93.3 WMMR, Soft Pretzels, Robins 8th and walnut, and all the cool Philly shit. However, I learned thew sad truth your prose so poigniantly states when I went back 10 years ago for my grandparent's 50th anniversary: "YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN!"
