Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone Review

John Rivers
The Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone is a VOIP phone which is intended to be a great travel companion. The phone hooks up with the VOIP program called Skype and you can make calls on it to other Skype users for free or make low-cost calls to land phones or cell phones. However, the Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone works, but there are a few drawbacks about it.

First of all, the Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone's price range starts from 26 dollars (Amazon.com). The phone is wired with a USB cable which plugs directly to your computer. It needs to be plugged in in order to work. The USB cable can be a little disturbing because of its short length and you will always need to be near your computer while talking. Take into consideration that there are other VOIP phones which are wireless so you won't need to stay near your PC in order to talk, but these wireless VOIP phones cost more. The Philips VOIP phone is compatible with PC and with Mac. The phone produces quite good quality sound but I had some problems with the it a couple of times, so I won't say that it is a hundred per cent reliable. Personally, I would like the ability to make the sound louder, I am not saying that it is too quiet but there could be some difficulties communicating in a very loud place. The Philips phone will show all of your Skype contacts on its screen when installed.

One of the major problems of the Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone is its compatibility with Skype and the fickleness of the software. I suffered from couple of software crashes during the usage. These crashes interrupted or even stopped the call. Despite that, one of the biggest troubles was the incompatibility with Skype. When I first installed the Philips VOIP1511B/37 phone, I noticed that it does not work with my Skype version which I was using. I tried downgrading the Skype version to 3.5 from 4 and then the phone worked then. This makes it clear that the software is not yet 100 per cent configured and you will need to update it regularly for more reliability.

All in all, the Philips VOIP1511B/37 Skype Travel Phone is a decent VOIP phone, especially if you are using Skype when traveling. However, if you are a heavy Skype user and you use it for business and other important calls, I suggest that you look for a better and more reliable VOIP Skype phone.
