PhoneFusion: Visual Voicemail for Google Android

Nathan R. Hale
When it comes to voicemail on a high resolution, touch screen device like the Google Android powered T-Mobile G1, you don't want traditional voicemail. Who wants to dial-in "blind" the old fashioned way, when PhoneFusion gives you visual voicemail information before you listen, and then lets you choose the order in which you hear your messages?

Installation
To install PhoneFusion Visual Voicemail, simply search for for PhoneFusion in the Android Market. Open the "Visual Voicemail" app in the search results, and select the Install button. The PhoneFusion application for Android does almost all the set up for you...once installed, open the application and find the settings menu. Once there, tap on the "Activate FV+" option, and you should be good to go! All your calls should be forwarded to the PhoneFusion voicemail system. I've used other voicemail-forwarding services on platforms other than Android, and I was extremely impressed with how easy to set up the PhoneFusion system was.

Usage & Features
There are so many great features in the PhoneFusion Visual Voicemail for Android app--and they all work so well--it's difficult to know where to begin. Of course, I love the fact that I can tap-to-listen to any of voicemails, in any order I choose. Information like like contact name, contact photo, phone number, and the date and time are displayed with each voicemail, so I can instantly see if there are any voicemail messages I've been putting off listening to. The duration of each message is also displayed on the main screen, so I make to sure to only listen to messages that I have time for.

PhoneFusion for Android also allows for quick and easy deletion of messages. Actually, they get moved to the "Trash," like on your desktop computer, so voicemails are still available if you change your mind later. Another great feature is the ability to listen to voicemail through the speakerphone, which really makes hearing long messages or many messages more comfortable.

It's also easy to mark voicemails as read without listening to them, or keep voicemail's you've already listened to marked as read.

PhoneFusion Visual Voicemail for Android also supports alternate skins, custom voicemail greetings, and clean web interface for managing your voicemail away from your Android phone.

Areas for Improvement
Every time PhoneFusion gets a new voicemail message, your Android handset is also sent a text a message. This is a minor inconvenience that is surely outweighed by the awesomeness of having visual voicemail, but it is an inconvenience none the less. I'm looking forward to the Android team and PhoneFusion addressing this issue. I'd also like to see a slicker interface...there's nothing terribly wrong with their current look, but it could be better.

Conclusions
PhoneFusion Visual Voicemail is in my top 5 essential apps for Android because it makes working with voicemail significantly easier...no simple task. I highly recommend this application to Android users everywhere!
