Photo of Barack Obama in a Turban Circulating

Yet More Mud for the Mud-slinging

Chris M. Carmichael
A Photo of Barack Obama in a turban is now circulating on the web. Rumors claim that the photo, which according to the Associated Press was taken in 2006 when Barack Obama visited Kenya, was circulated by Clinton Campaign staffers. This rumor has been vehemently denied by Clinton campaign staff. They claim no prior knowledge of the photo.

This Obama turban Photo is just another large chunk of mud thrown into the election year mud-slinging ring. Who threw the mud into the ring? That may never be known. Will the photo of Obama in a turban sway voters? I doubt it. Obama supporters will continue to support him and recognize why he he donned the turban--he presumably wore Kenyan garb while there out of respect for Kenyan culture.

Non-supporters already have their mind made up anyway. A photo of Obama in a turban won't make a big difference.

The only thing a photo like this elicits from the average intelligent Joe is a lot of rolling of the eyes and sighs. Now, if someone discovered a nude photo or sex-tape of either Obama or Clinton, it would be an entirely different situation. That would be big (and unpleasant) news. Is it a big deal that Barack Obama was photographed wearing a turban while visiting tribal elders in Kenya? Only if a turban was all he was wearing.

Watching election news this time around is like watching children on a playground. I hope American voters will look past all the mud and vote based on facts rather than rumor.

For the record, Barack Obama is not a Muslim. Obama is purported to be a Christian.

Note: I remain an undecided voter and this opinion piece is not intended as an Obama endorsement--nor is it intended as an anti-endorsement of Obama or Clinton. This is the first time in all my voting years that I've remained undecided this far along in the presidential race.

I definately don't want to see nude photo's of either. There is so much concrete information to help decide that this is ludicrous. Checking the voting and attendance record of Obama (and possibly Clinton, but I don't know hers) is something worthwhile, not this garbage.

I would expect him to wear one simply out of sheer respect for the people of Kenya. It just seems like a futile atempt to smear a man who seems to have his head and heart in the right place. Thanks for sharing this, Chris.

thank you for the comments, everyone. Although I don't agree with everything that Marquis said, I believe that allowing open discussion about this is one thing that makes this country great. Slightly off the subject but not really--I've voiced my view elsewhere that I was unhappy with Russia's former president Putin. One reason was that he stifled the media and took away whatever freedom of speech Russians temporarily possessed.

Yeah, Chris, this was definitely a ploy by someone (the 'Drudge Report' says they got their copy from the Clinton camp) to smear Obama or at least cast some doubt. It's a shame. Playing the fear game is base and classless, no matter who began circulating the photo...

The mud-slinging is sickening. I'd rather hear what someone is about from THEIR mouth rather than hear how terrible they are from their opponents. Info like that just isn't credible. Great report!

oops - sorry - comment a bit long...anyway, meant to say " I know writers who differ from my current viewpoint and take on the election and yet I respect their views. If we can't try to respect each other's views and maintain an open discussion, how can we learn, grown and allow the opportunity to change? Many writers here have gotten me to look more deeply at SPECIFIC issues in this election and with the candidates. I would not have done that if my mind was closed. I think writers need to be willing to look at all sides of issues, including political races and candidates. Thanks for adding to the discussion :)
