[PHOTOS] Calyx Schenecker, Cross Country Star Athlete, Murdered by Mother

Sixteen year-old Calyx Schenecker, a promising King High School cross country athlete, was murdered Thursday in her New Tampa, Fla., home in a brutal case of domestic violence. The killer was her own mother, Julie Schenecker, 50, the wife of a US Army colonel. Julie Schenecker also killed Calyx Schenecker's younger brother, Beau, 13, apparently in the car on the way either to or from soccer practice.

Both children were shot in the head; Beau at least twice. The children's father, Col. Schenecker, was working in the Middle East when news of the horrific incident broke.

A sophmore at King High School in Tampa, Calyx Powers Schenecker was skilled in athletics, focusing her energy on cross country running. Her brother, 13 year-old Beau Schenecker, was in 8th grade at Liberty Middle School, and enjoyed soccer.

Memorials and candlelight vigils have been organized by friends and family of the Schenecker's and the community, and a memory book will be signed by those wishing to express their condolences to the family. The Calyx and Beau Schenecker book will be taken to King High School first, and then to Liberty Middle School.
