I love watching the boats going through the locks. All the time I was in the USA, one thing that I missed a lot was being able to sit outside a pub on the canals and watch the boats go by.

I used to live near locks when I was a kid in Yorkshire. Loved watching the barges going up and down :-) Nice photos.

The locks on the canals are sections that are "locked off", where the boats go in, the water raises or lowers to the next level, and the boast sails on. This way they can go up and down hills. The technology to do this was invented in the 1700's, and is the same as used on places like the Panama Canal, although on a much larger scale.
