Historic 1880 Covered Bridge Still In Use
One Indiana County's Effort to Restore a Landmark
Historic Covered Bridges are disappearing at an alarming rate. It is refreshing to see an 1880 bridge not only saved, but restored in place. Decatur County, Indiana has done just that.

Post a CommentThis is one of the really pretty covered bridges. The Parke County covered Bridge Festival is coming up Oct 8 - 17, 2010.
Beautiful photos! Covered bridges are a piece of Americana I love. We have amazing working covered bridges in Pennsylvania and Western North Carolina!
"Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved."
I love these bridges. I loved Bridges of Madison County. The premiere episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine features a wonderful covered bridge in California where Cmdr. Sisko and his son Jake are fishing. It's "holographic" and when they end the program he tells his son that they'll take the fishing hole & bridge with them to their new home - the station DS9. : )
Thank you for sharing this bit of history/nostalgia. I love covered bridges and you're right, there aren't many left intact.
Maybe I'll get done returning comments before we go to Conroe, TX on Thursday (and then I'll probably have tons more after that!)
May is turning out to be a crazy month. Got over 100 comments to return. Hopefully things will be back to normal in June!
Cool pictures...thanks for sharing!
I am curious as to why bridges were covered in the first place. I would assume there was some sound reason for it, or was it strictly an exercise in aesthetics?
Love these bridges. When I was growing up I remember there used to be one where I lived. I will have to ask my dad if it is still there.
