The Desecration of St. George's Cemetery

Michele Starkey

Nestled just a few blocks up from the Hudson River in Newburgh, NY is a historical cemetery that was founded in 1838. For 172 years it has stood as an example of a 19th Century rural cemetery. Recently, vandals have left their mark.

Michele, I am glad you made a note about these photos when you commented on my cemetery article. I missed this. What a terrible thing to do. I cannot imagine doing that to someones headstone! Awful! Makes me sad! :(

    Apparently NOT!

That's terrible. In my hometown, we used to have problems with young kids riding 4 wheelers thru the cementary while knocking over the old grave stones. This is the first I've heard of vandals spray painting the stones, though. Dreadful.

    Just awful!

Horrible. I know this is what is happening in our city also.

That is terrible and I hope they find who did this. I couldn't look at all your photos because it's heartbreaking. Can you imagine how the family members of the deceased feel?
