I tried some of these for shady pots I can move around in the woods where we picnic, campfire, etc... The light weight makes them SO nice! THANKS for the ideas!

Vince, I think you are exactly right. The sweet gum tree balls (seedpods) allow drainage b/c they don't mash together tightly at first. At the same time, they absorb water that can be released into the potting soil that touches the top layer of seedpods and which has worked it way down among them. I wondered if the seedpods would make the soil too acidic, but they break down so slowly, I don't see any effect on a planting in one season. They can be refreshed each year as the Sweet Gum tree will accommodate with many more seedpods next season!
