Pictures Of An Old Cemetery

Tony Payne

This is a set of photographs that I took at the Old Cemetery in Southampton. For years the graves were just allowed to be overgrown, but now some attempts are being made to restore part of the cemetery.

This might sound morbid, but this series has me wondering what my headstone will look like and how long it will be maintained...50 years? 100? 500? It is sad on one hand that old cemetaries are overgrown, but I think it looks hauntingly beautiful on the other.

upkeep for old cemeteries is so difficult. There are many small plots that dot our county, some lost in the woods. Sometimes people who live nearby mow and trim when they have a chance. I hate to see a run-down cemetery.

Nice cemetary pics! I wanted to leave a pun, but decided it would be a grave mistake!

Lovely pics, but obviously the "Friends" need to get out there a little more often with some hedge clippers!!

Sad to think of all the mariners whose bodies were never found.

I love old cemeteries, too. Your Titanic note reminds me of a cemetery in Searsport, Maine, where many of them read "Lost at Sea."

I love old cemeteries. The headstones seem to be more individualistic and beautiful than most of what we see now. Even the small concrete ones sometime have a poem or prayer engraved. If you can still manage to make out the words, that is. Good stuff. Thanks!
