    You know, I looked at the original full size picture, and I have no idea. The only thing I can think it looks like is one of those pillows that support your neck. Maybe it's a Medieval version...

    The American flag is there in the church because during WWII a lot of American troops were stationed in the area prior to D-Day, and also there were American Air Force bases in the area. We still have close ties in many communities, and they are remembered.
