Very interesting! This is a great way to find out the identity of a mystery plant. I'll admit I had no idea what it was.

I'm glad someone out there knew the answer. I've never seen this plant before!

I was going to say wild cucumber - I saw it in Corsica last month - it's called "concombre sauvage" here - but I see you want to know what variety and I have no idea. Sorry!

Yes, I was referring to Creeping as synonymous with Guadaloupe (M. pendula), with smooth-skinned fruits. It is not synonymous with Squirting (E. elaterium), with hairy or spiny fruits, except perhaps in some colloquial context. For the record, these are still found in Indiana, especially river bottom fields. E. elaterium is used in Turkish folk medicine, and various isolates are being studied for pharm uses. The juice is a skin irritant.

Unfortunately, the term "Squirting Cucumber" appears to be attached to more than one variety, even as Fern (below) suggests. The names Guadaloupe Cucumber or Creeping Cucumber may be preferable.

Fern -- "Creeping Cucumber" is synonymous with Guadaloupe Cucumber.
