Physical Symptoms of Mold Illness

Julie Boehlke
Mold illness occurs when the buildup of mold spores and mildew accumulates on the walls or surface area of a home or business. The person affected breathes in the mold spores and it begins to affect their overall health. People can also get sick if the food they eat comes in contact with mold or mold spores. For someone with advanced exposure it may develop into a mold illness that needs prompt medical attention.

Eye and Skin irritation

An exposure with mold can cause illness resulting in severe eye and skin irritation. Eyes may begin to burn or become watery at the exposure to the mold. This can be mild or severe. The reason for this is the person may also be experiencing an allergic reaction to the mold itself. Skin may also become irritated. Itching, burning, redness and skin irritation may be present on areas exposed to the mold.

Fatigue

Some people who live in homes who have black mold or excessive mold on the inside of their walls may be unaware they are being exposed to the mold. One of the symptoms of mold illness related to long term exposure could be fatigue. The body may be trying to develop a defense mechanism against the mold. This results in wearing the immune system down causing drowsiness or extreme tiredness.

Breathing Difficulties

Breathing difficulties can also be found in many people who are exposed to mold that develop mold illness. This could range from a mild cough to extreme difficulty breathing. In severe cases, those exposed to too much mold could begin to cough up blood or have black spots in their mucus. Many people with mold illnesses may also suffer from chronic sinus infections.

Weight Loss

Some people who have untreated mold illness may also experience changes in their appetite. This could include not wanting to eat and an overall loss of appetite. They could also experience bouts of nausea that may lead to vomiting. This could cause weight loss or the inability to gain weight or regain their appetite.

Memory Loss

In extreme cases of mold illness, some people may develop periods of long term memory loss. This can often be confused or masked as another medical condition such as dementia or Alzheimer's if the memory loss is severe. If the person is exposed to excessive mold, the memory loss could be permanent.
